Promotion for your Book

Peter Lang has many years' successful experience of direct marketing and undertakes to bring your work to the attention of journals, scholars and book buyers all over the world.

As academic books are geared towards a specialist readership, we address our target groups with specialized mailings and distribute the books ourselves, direct to the customer. We maintain our own comprehensive database of potential buyers of academic books from which we can call up relevant target groups. In addition we regularly buy addresses of specific academic target groups. We send our catalogues to university libraries, departmental and faculty libraries and individual academics, as well as to specialist institutions, organizations and the book trade worldwide.

Title Registration with Bibliographies and Databases

English-speaking countries: Each English-language title is registered prior to publication with the Library of Congress, which ensures that information about your book is widely circulated. Our English-language books are also registered with the British Library. They are announced to Bowker (USA) and appear in Nielsen BookData. These databases are used for reference and ordering. Each English-language title is separately announced to major wholesalers, such as Baker & Taylor, Blackwell, www.amazon.com and others. All our books are also listed on www.amazon.co.uk.

German-speaking countries: Every Peter Lang book is registered prior to publication with the VLB (a list of books in print). The VLB passes the title registrations to the Deutsche Bibliothek. The VLB can be accessed via the internet. We send the publicity texts of all our titles to the VLB. Your book is guaranteed to remain in the VLB as long as it is in print. All books registered with the VLB automatically appear on www.amazon.de.

French-speaking countries: French-language titles are registered with the bibliography Electre. This database is widely used in the French-speaking book trade.

Publicity Flyers

We will make up an A4 publicity flyer using the text on the back cover of your book as a description. Please bear this in mind when composing your proposed text for the back cover. Since this is the only piece of information concerning the content of the book that a potential purchaser will see, we reserve the right to make adjustments to the publicity text.
We will ask you to send us postal addresses for all individuals, institutions and learned societies that may be interested in your book. Please bear in mind that we cannot accept incomplete addresses or lists. E-mail addresses are welcome in addition but we do need the postal addresses as well. If you have difficulties in providing us with addresses, please let us know.
The sooner we receive your addresses the sooner we can produce your publicity flyer. We will automatically send you 50 copies (editors receive 25 copies) for your own use, as soon as the flyer is printed. Please let us know as soon as possible if you need more than 50 publicity flyers or if you would like us to send flyers to a relevant academic conference.

Reviews

As detailed in your contract, we set aside a certain number of copies of each book for review and other promotional purposes. Experience has shown that a direct mailing of unsolicited review copies leads to very few reviews in return. In most cases we therefore send out review copies only upon a journal’s request. Potential reviewers and journals receive an invitation to request a review copy. We already have a list of important journals for each subject. These journals regularly receive our New Publications Bulletins, but we would like to send an invitation to request a review copy to those journals most relevant for your book. We will ask for your assistance in identifying the best journals and individuals to approach about your book by marking the most important journals on the lists supplied to you and adding any other relevant journals and individuals. We will send out up to thirty review invitations.
We also receive requests for copies from review editors who have seen our titles in other places. We ask reviewers to send us a copy of the published review; you will receive a copy of each review that is sent to us.

Please note that review copies are essentially the property of the publisher and we reserve the right to decide where to send them.

Catalogues

Our catalogues are mailed worldwide and include the following:

New Publications Bulletins: These are our main catalogues and all new Peter Lang books are listed in the relevant catalogue. As a Peter Lang author, you will receive our new publications bulletins for your field(s) of interest. Our catalogues are also available as downloads on the Peter Lang website.
Special Focus Catalogues: We occasionally produce catalogues focusing on a special theme. If applicable, your book will be listed.
Catalogues for specific markets: Peter Lang is present in India and China. From time to time, we produce catalogues specifically targeted at these markets. These catalogues contain mainly English-language titles.
Series Catalogues: Occasionally we produce series catalogues if we decide that this is the right way to market a specific series.

Internet Marketing

The Peter Lang website is www.peterlang.com. All our published titles can be ordered direct from our online bookshop. New publications are added as soon as they are published. You can also find an overview of all our series and journals on the website and sign up to our mailing list for up-to-date information on new titles in your particular field of interest.

Book Fairs and Conferences

We have a stand at the annual Frankfurt and Leipzig Book Fairs where many of our recent books are put on display. We are occasionally also present at other book fairs.

We attend academic conferences in various countries. In some cases we provide book displays; in others we send marketing materials. We would therefore be grateful for early notification from you of any important conferences coming up in your subject area, though please note that we are not able to attend or even to send marketing materials in every case.

Local Marketing for the United Kingdom and Ireland

If you have any questions about local marketing then please contact oxford@peterlang.com.

Please keep in mind

The success of good publicity depends essentially on two factors:

1) Determining the target group as accurately as possible and finding the means to reach them

2) Promoting a title in a timely manner following its publication.

We depend on your assistance in helping us with both these aspects of a successful promotion campaign.
