Zusammenfassung
Das vorliegende Werk umfasst eine Reihe hermeneutischer Abhandlungen des Autors, in deren Fokus die Deutung der Sprachauffassungen Fichtes, Herders, Humboldts und der Romantiker steht. Der Autor untersucht dabei die Formierung von Erfahrung und Kunst durch Sprache und Einbildungskraft sowie die Entstehung von Sprache, Selbstbewusstsein und Verstehen in der Rede. Desgleichen behandelt er Semiotik, Philologie und Philosophie der Geschichte, sowie die Rolle der Phänomenologie und des Interpretationsbegriffs in der Literaturkritik. Im Besonderen hebt der Autor die Auffassungen von Vico, A.W. und F. Schlegel, Novalis, Germaine de Staël, F. Schleiermacher hervor und beleuchtet Übersetzungs-, Diskurs- und Kulturtransfertheorien sowie die Poetik der Romantiker.

Preface
This volume of collected essays by Kurt Mueller-Vollmer, previously scattered among diverse journals and anthologies, grew out of a wish, in giving them a fresh presentation, to be able to conveniently study them together.1 Formed in meticulous scholarship, rigorous thinking, encompassing perspective and incisive insight, these essays offer challenging, thought-provoking contributions to literary hermeneutics and language philosophy.2
The new collection is also intended to serve as a companion volume to Kurt Mueller-Vollmer’s recently published Transatlantic Crossings and Transformations.3
Focusing on cultural discourse transfer and translation, Transatlantic Crossings presents for the first time a comprehensive view of the process of German-American cultural transfer in the 18th and 19th centuries. This transfer, to which especially the New England Transcendentalists made decisive contributions, played a prominent role in forming an American national identity.4
Enlarging upon Transatlantic Crossings’ cultural transfer and translation-discourse concerns, the present volume takes up as overarching themes the nature and role of language in human life and art, the relationship between language and understanding, and the role of imagination5 in creating and linking language and poetry.
For example, the classical “representational” view of language that regards words as signs signifying independently existing entities is contrasted with Wilhelm von Humboldt’s pioneering linguistic-philosophical notion that, within ←7 | 8→the intimate relationship between thinking and speaking, “languages embody in their very structure the perspective through which its speakers view and experience world.”6
← | 9→The essays highlight key contributions J. G. Herder, J. G. Fichte, A. W. and F. Schlegel, Novalis, Wilhelm von Humboldt, Anne Germaine de Staël, and F. Schleiermacher made to Romantic poetic, linguistic, hermeneutic, and translation theories, including the insights they reached into how language, self-consciousness and understanding arise in speech acts.

Kurt Mueller-Vollmer is a leading scholar on the work of Wilhelm von Humboldt. „Auf der Suche nach Humboldts verlorener Sprachwissenschaft: Der Philologe als Detektiv,“ in Abhandlungen der Humboldt Gesellschaft, ed. Wolfgang Weber, vol.13, (Mannheim: Verlag Humboldt-Gesellschaft für Wissenschaft, Kunst und Bildung, e. V., 1995), 201-221, chronicles how, through a combination of reasoning, international engagement and research, he was able to track down a veritable treasure-trove of Humboldt’s missing, otherwise scarcely known manuscripts that contain the latter’s empirical-practical linguistic studies involving some 400 languages.
In unearthing and cataloguing these manuscripts Kurt Mueller-Vollmer has made a contribution of historic importance to Humboldt scholarship that decisively adds to Humboldt’s previously published philosophical-linguistic writings [see Wilhelm von Humboldt, Gesammelte Schriften, hrsg. von der Königlich Preussische Akademie der Wissenschaften und Albert Leitzmann (Berlin: B. Behr Verlag, 1903-1936)]. His Wilhelm von Humboldts Sprachwissenschaft. Ein kommentiertes Verzeichnis des Sprachwissenschaftlichen Nachlasses (Paderborn, München, Wien, Zürich: Schöningh Verlag, 1993) provides an overview and description of the grammars Humboldt produced for languages in Asia, Europe and the Americas. These discoveries are not in the least significant as they attest to Humboldt’s rejection of the idea of a “mother language” such as Sanskrit or of the primacy of Indo-European linguistics for explaining the origins of the world’s languages. Instead, the newly discovered manuscripts reinforce Humboldt’s notion that the world’s languages in all their diverse individuality express humanity’s generic linguistic abilities - also suggesting that the dimensions of Humboldt’s linguistics require fresh discovery.
