Introduction

This volume is dedicated to Professor Piotr Stalmaszczyk, formerly Dean of the Faculty of Philology, currently Head of the Department of English and General Linguistics at the University of Łódź, on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Piotr Stalmaszczyk is one of the best known Polish linguists. He is a member of, among others, the Committee of Linguistics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Polish Linguistic Society, the Polish Philological Society, and the Łódź Learned Society. His academic output is so prolific that the bibliography included in this volume lists only monographs for the sake of space.

The volume’s generic title “Explorations in Language and Linguistics” is intentional. Piotr Stalmaszczyk’s academic interests span an extremely wide spectrum, from Celtology and language contact, through semantics, pragmatics, generative grammar, theoretical linguistics, to logic and philosophy of language. The dozen chapters in the volume, all authored by scholars affiliated with the Institute of English Studies in Łódź and Polish academics who have collaborated with Piotr Stalmaszczyk in the past, reflect these areas and due to their heterogeneity and academic quality would not only constitute pleasant reading matter for Professor Stalmaszczyk himself, but also make for a concise handbook of contemporary linguistics.

It is one thing to have diverse research interests, though, and quite another to be able to clearly see the big picture, the complex web of interrelations between them and their implications for the development of the humanities. The latter is a feat that few can accomplish. Even fewer can relay this knowledge in a succinct and digestible way through teaching in academia. Piotr Stalmaszczyk is not only an accomplished linguist and earnest observer of the mechanisms of language as a social phenomenon and communication tool, but also a successful teacher, who has managed to spark off keen interest in language in generations of graduates, among them the two editors of the present volume. A generativist at heart, he was not only able and willing to involve in informative and factual academic debates with cognitivists, but also present both linguistic schools of thought (and structuralism, and functionalism) to his students in an objective and lucid fashion.

Several of his students, colleagues, friends, and conferees have now come up with fresh ideas for discussion in the form of this book. The result is an inspiring collection of texts dealing with some of the most urgent themes within an extensive range of analytical fields and foci, from language history, philosophy, rhetoric and argumentation (Przemysław Żywiczyński, Mieszko Tałasiewicz, Martin Hinton), ← 11 | 12 → through methodology of linguistics (Henryk Kardela, Agnieszka Kiełkiewicz-Janowiak), to quantitative and qualitative discourse studies (Stanisław Goźdź-Roszkowski, Piotr Cap). The theoretical approaches and perspectives extending over these fields are among the most vibrant, fruitful and dynamically developing in the contemporary language studies, including cognitive linguistics (Elżbieta Tabakowska), discourse semantics (Katarzyna Jaszczołt), sociolinguistics (Ewa Waniek-Klimczak), and (multimodal) pragmatics (Marta Dynel). Readers of the volume will often find one issue discussed from several angles, such as language data serving to substantiate ontological claims about ‘the world’ (Hinton) and being itself an object of attention and analysis (Kiełkiewicz-Janowiak). Elsewhere, they are invited to judge some competing views on a phenomenon, as in Kardela’s discussion of a possible (?) rapprochement of cognitive linguistic and biolinguistic research frameworks. The analytical persuasions discussed and represented in the texts may thus be diverse, but certainly all in favor of (and themselves stimulating) a theoretical and methodological dialogue, a ‘live example’ of which comes in the interview of Łukasz Bogucki with Barbara Lewandowska-Tomaszczyk, which closes the book. As editors, we are pleased to be able to present this collection of essays and research papers to our colleague and friend, Professor Piotr Stalmaszczyk, but also to the general readership, in the hope that it constitutes a state-of-the-art picture of the ever-developing discipline of linguistics.
