Series:

Edited by Ольга Инькова

La pertinence en traduction juridique

Un regard franco-allemand

Series:

Edited by Margarete Durr

Language, Heart, and Mind

Studies at the intersection of emotion and cognition

Series:

Edited by Barbara Lewandowska-Tomaszczyk, Valeria Monello and Marco Venuti

A major premise of this book is that language use is critically conditioned by affective content and cognitive factors rather than being a case of objective computation and manipulation of structures. The 21 chapters of this book deals with how language interacts with emotion, and with mind and cognition, from both intralingual and cross-linguistic perspectives. The second major focus is the theoretical framework, best-suited for research relationships between language, cognition, and emotion as well as the effect that emotion has on the conceptualizer who constructs meanings based on language stimuli. Furthermore, the authors investigate how emotion and rational projections of events interact and what their consequences are in the conceptual world, media discourse, and translation.

Rechtspraktikerliteratur und neuhochdeutsche Schriftsprache

Conrad Heydens Klagspiegel und Ulrich Tenglers Laienspiegel

Series:

Barbara Aehnlich

Like many other human activities, translation is related to different forms of power. It can be the ability to control and set the rules. With written translations of significant works of culture, it has often been the powerholders who supported and promoted or impeded them, depending on their own preferences or their understanding of the actual sociopolitical needs. The powerholders in question are individual or collective decision-makers at various levels of the sociopolitical hierarchy who determine policies and allocate funds for approved projects. This book focuses on the possiblities of various approches to translation and power as a research topic within Translation Studies.

Internationalization of Universities and the National Language

Language Policy Interventions and Case Studies

Series:

Edited by Danny Pieters and Thijs Keersmaekers

Universities are pressed to compete within the global scene of international higher education. What is the status of the national or local language in higher education when the dominance of English in the academic world increases? Universities have become an interesting field for research on sociolinguistic and language policy aspects. How can the global edge and the local function of universities be effectively combined?
This book combines case study contributions from countries within and outside Europe in order to underline the key language policy challenges universities around the world face in their attempt to remain nationally leading and interna-tionally competitive institutions. The grouping of different countries and contexts leads to the scrutiny of a variety of scopes that complement each other.

This is a descriptive study, based on PhD research, that aims to find out what sorts of formulaic language are used by Chinese learners of English, and what the learners think about the concept, learning, use and teaching formulaic language in the EFL context. The author does this by analyzing texts written by two groups of Chinese EFL learners (83 first-year college students and 73 third-year college students) and interviews with 12 focal participants (6 from each group). The main findings are that formulaic language did occur in the learners’ output, and that there was a measure of correspondence between the ‘strings’ that the students identified for themselves as holistic units, and ‘clusters’ that the researcher identified computationally as frequent. The terms core formulaic language pairs and shared formulaic language were proposed, suggesting a broader view of what is formulaic on the part of the EFL learners. This book ends with a discussion of the implications for teaching practice and the direction for future research on formulaic language in the EFL context.

Improving Academic Listening and Note-Taking Skills

A Study in Foreign Learners’ Strategy Training

Series:

Karolina Kotorowicz-Jasińska

The book investigates the effectiveness of long-term strategy training on how successfully and efficiently students listen to lectures and take notes. It is centered around a longitudinal study designed to measure to what extent a specially designed course allows 1st year undergraduate students to improve their academic skills. The research presented is grounded in theoretical perspectives on general listening comprehension, discourse processing, and teaching second language subskills. The book will be of interest to anyone interested in tertiary education and providing college and university students with courses useful in their academic performance. The readers might also gain insights into long-term research methodology of which the book gives a detailed account.
