Is the official political silencing of children in a democracy rational and just, or is it arbitrary and capricious? How might democratic polities benefit from the political engagement and activism of young people? Michael Cummings argues that allowing children equal political rights with adults is required by the basic logic of democracy and can help strengthen the weak democracies of the twenty-first century. A good start is for governments to honor their obligations under the ambivalently utopian UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Children’s political views differ from those of adults on issues such as race, sex, militarism, poverty, education, gun violence, and climate change. Young activists are now sparking change in many locations around the globe.

Nigerian Society, Education, and Empowerment
This book identifies and examine the changing roles of Nigerian women: in the family, educational attainment and society as experienced and expressed by a sample of educated, Nigerian women. Five of the participants were children caught in Biafran (Nigerian) war and their education was interrupted during the war. All struggle to gain education as girls and women growing up in Nigeria in families with sometimes limited resources. The book is based on the assumption that changes are taking place at all levels of Nigerian society, and that these changes are reflected in the way Nigerian women think and express views about themselves and their extended families. Nine Nigerian women resident in Egypt, were interviewed in depth using the 'topical life history' method to reveal their attitudes and perceptions concerning the woman's role in the family. In lengthy, free form, non-directive interviews, the participants recount their life histories from small children to the present day, and in this process comment and reveal their feelings about personal, family and social issues. Based on a literature review some eight hypotheses are identified and examined concerning these issues and the participants' views about them. The response data are grouped under the hypotheses and analyzed. Conclusions suggest changing role patterns of women as expressed by these women from lower- and middle-class families, concerning education male and female children, bearing progeny, polygamy, earning income to provide for the family, marriage, male domination and influences and pressures from the extended family.

Este libro aborda el debate sobre los supuestos morales que subyacen a las regulaciones y prácticas, es decir, a las normas restrictivas sobre aborto en América Latina. En particular propone que la noción de biolegitimidad es un aspecto central de esta moralidad y que es en virtud del menor valor que se le reconoce o asigna a la vida de las mujeres, que tales restricciones se mantienen en todos los países de la región. Este menor valor se vincula, en el campo de la reproducción, con el rechazo a las mujeres que se niegan —cuando abortan— a la maternidad como un destino. Así, la persistencia de las normas restrictivas sobre aborto se fundamenta en la menor legitimidad que se otorga a la vida de las mujeres como biografía, limitando su libertad en materia de autodeterminación reproductiva. En este trabajo se cruzan el feminismo, la salud pública, el derecho y la bioética, el campo en el cual se ordena la conversación aquí propuesta. En suma, el libro ofrece una reflexión sobre los valores y principios que informan las normas —entendidas tanto en su sentido formal en cuanto disposiciones del derecho positivo, como en su sentido informal en tanto prácticas sociales— sobre aborto en América Latina.

Reflection Between the Drafts focuses on reflection in process rather than reflection on process. Based on empirical research, the text presents a theory to describe and explain what happens when students reflect between drafts useful to teachers and scholars interested in reflection. It identifies a common dynamic found in these reflections as well as four factors that represent key dimensions within between-the-draft reflection. Writers’ conception of their goal and ideas of success represents the most important controlling factor in their reflection and the role it may play in their writing. Reflection Between the Drafts is highly rhetorical, and the text explores the special kairotic moment between drafts, the connection of this reflection to rhetorical invention, as well as the nature of the reflective knowledge generated from this particular reflective stance between drafts that guides writers’ revision. The text also discusses the place of between-the-draft reflection in a writing curriculum and shares classroom practices for encouraging productive reflection between drafts.

This book focuses on the question of relationality. Despite the numerous motifs introduced to the discourse pertaining to Margaret S. Archer’s concept, we notice that some often reappear. What frequently appears is the concept of agency, closely related to the matter of the subject’s reflexivity. We also include papers that refer to methodological dilemmas. However, all collected texts directly consider the essence of the concept of the human person and society in reaction to the ontology of the person proposed by Archer. The common thread and horizon of these elaborations is Archer’s concept and Pierpaolo Donati’s relational sociology. Thus, this publication seeks to gain broader public and open new research perspectives in sociology.

The given volume provides insight into the integrated cooperation that was built in the trilateral scientific project "Aggression and Argumentation. Discourses of Conflict and their Linguistic Negotiation". Presented here are analyses of the relationship of language and power, the interplay of aggression and argumentation, as well as of cooperation and conflict. The Russian-Ukrainian conflict is an important, but not the only starting point for the analytical reflections, that are enriched through research on further conflict situations in Eastern European and (post)socialist areas like former Yugoslavia, the South Caucasus, Poland and the Czech Republic.
Ancient Greek history holds a special place in the works of many 19th-c. writers. The same goes for Cyprian Norwid, one of the most eminent poets in the history of Polish literature, a thinker, and an artist. This book scrutinizes Norwid’s fascination with Greek history and culture, especially his peculiar synthesis of Greek thought and Christianity. It focuses on the key themes of the relationship of Platonism with early Christian writings and their presence in Norwid’s contemporary culture, the opposition of memory and history in 19th-c. literature and social life, and the image of the artist and its influence on social life in modern everyday. The book analyzes Norwid’s oeuvre in a broad comparison with representatives of French, German, and British literature and the humanities.
