This book analyzes the literature that emerged from World War II. It also examines the literature that resulted from the two major earthquakes that have struck Japan over the course of over the last hundred years. The small number of volumes previously published examining the literature of war and earthquakes in Japan have almost always focused exclusively on fiction while this volume focuses mainly on poetry. This volume breaks new ground in its attempt to draw together and analyze the literature produced by these tragedies as a single phenomenon. It provides a new template for the literature of trauma produced by such events as the earthquake that accompanied the tsunami and nuclear meltdown in northeast Japan in 2011.

The book is the first systematic study of the beginnings of psychoanalysis on Polish lands in Galicia (Austria-Hungary) and Congress Poland (Russia) during the partitions of Poland in the years between 1900 and 1918. The birth of the movement was presented on a broad cultural background, as an element of the assimilation processes among Polish Jews. At the same time, Freud's and Jung's theories began to gain popularity in Polish medical, philosophical, artistic and literary circles. By 1918, over a dozen articles on psychoanalysis had been published in Polish scientific and philosophical journals. Freud himself was vitally interested in this process, sending Ludwig Jekels to Krakow in the role of – as he wrote – an "apostle" of his theory in the circles of the Polish intelligentsia.

Learning and memory processes are basic features of human existence. They allow us to (un)consciously adapt to changes in our social and physical environment in a variety of ways and may have been a precursor for survival in human evolution. Through several reviews and original work the book focuses on three key topics that enhanced our understanding of the topic in the last twenty years: first, the role of real-time auditory feedback in learning, second, the role of motor aspects for learning and memory, and third, representations in memory and the role of sleep on memory consolidation.

Parcours de vie et mémoires de pauvres

Changements personnels et sociohistoriques dans les bidonvilles de Mumbai

Cette thèse s’inscrit dans la perspective du parcours de vie, sous l’angle du regard porté sur les changements personnels et sociohistoriques de l’existence, dans un contexte culturel précis, celui de l’Inde urbaine moderne. Au travers de la récolte de plus de 1250 interviews, réalisées à Mumbai en 2012 et 2014 parmi des adultes âgés de 20 à 86 ans, habitant·e·s de bidonvilles et d’immeubles de classe moyenne inférieure, le contenu et la temporalité des événements vécus considérés comme importants par les répondant·e·s sont analysés. Outre le souci évident d’observer les trajectoires et les moments marquants de la vie, selon le point de vue des personnes elles-mêmes, cette thèse cherche à dépasser l’a priori selon lequel les habitant·e·s des slums seraient vulnérables par évidence, afin de révéler des vulnérabilités insoupçonnées, présentes sous des formes diverses.

La Dordogne, anciennement Périgord, est située dans l’historiographie en périphérie de la zone des familles souches du Sud-Ouest. Le mode de transmission et de reproduction familiale permet de comprendre comment s’organise la famille et comment se nouent les liens en son sein. Outre les relations juridiques, économiques, patrimoniales, est-il possible d’approcher les relations d’ordre affectif? L’étude porte sur les familles ayant vécu dans le village de Saint-Léon-sur-l’Isle, entre 1780 et 1839. Une lecture très fine des sources, notamment des actes notariés, met en évidence les logiques de comportement et leur évolution pendant une période de bouleversements qui malmènent les équilibres familiaux. Elle livre également un aperçu de l’intimité familiale, celle du couple en particulier.

This book explores the different treatment of writing by women and
writing by men in twenty-first-century Spain. Focusing on contemporary
Spanish authors Ana María Matute (1926–2014), Rosa Montero (1952–),
and Lucía Etxebarria (1966–), the author examines how Spanish women
writers are marketed in Spain and, in particular, how current marketing
strategies reinforce traditional structures of femininity.

Through an analysis of their work and lives in the context of the Franco
Regime, the Transition to democracy and contemporary Spain, this book
provides an innovative study of the construction of the public personae
of these key female writers. As social media and the internet transform
authors’ relationship with their readers, the rapidly shifting publishing
industry offers an important context for the difficult balance between
high levels of reception and visibility and the persistence of traditional
gender stereotypes.
