From Orientalism to Cultural Capital

The Myth of Russia in British Literature of the 1920s

From Orientalism to Cultural Capital presents a fascinating account of the wave of Russophilia that pervaded British literary culture in the early twentieth century. The authors bring a new approach to the study of this period, exploring the literary phenomenon through two theoretical models from the social sciences: Orientalism and the notion of «cultural capital» associated with Pierre Bourdieu. Examining the responses of leading literary practitioners who had a significant impact on the institutional transmission of Russian culture, they reassess the mechanics of cultural dialogism, mediation and exchange, casting new light on British perceptions of modernism as a transcultural artistic movement and the ways in which the literary interaction with the myth of Russia shaped and intensified these cultural views.

Die Studie zum Fremdsprachenunterricht in deutschen Grundschulen bietet einen Überblick über Bundesländergrenzen hinweg in eine heterogene Bildungslandschaft, die von erheblichen curricularen Unterschieden und Widersprüchen geprägt ist.

Neben dieser Bestandsaufnahme zeigen die Autoren auf, welche bildungspolitischen und fachdidaktischen Ausgestaltungen Fachleute aus Hochschulen, Landesinstituten und Schulen als sinnvoll und wünschenswert erachten. Ihr Meinungsbild erlaubt es, bundesländerübergreifende Konzepte für die qualitative Weiterentwicklung des frühen Fremdsprachenunterrichts zu entwickeln, daraus resultierende Implikationen für Lehreraus- und Fortbildung zu beleuchten und so letztlich eine Basis für nationale Mindeststandards für den Fremdsprachenunterricht in der Grundschule zu bieten.

From prehistory to this day, we have been haunted by our memories, the past itself, by inklings of the future, by events playing outside our lives, and by ourselves. Hence the lure of ghost stories throughout history and presumably prehistory. Science has been a great destroyer of myth and superstition, but at the same time it has created new black boxes which we are filling with our ghostly imagination. In this book, literature from the Middle Ages to Oscar Wilde and Neil Gaiman, children’s stories, folklore and films, ranging from the Antarctic and Russia to Haiti, are covered and show the continuing presence of spectral phenomena.

The study centers on the presentation of the North American borderlands in the works of Canadian Native writer Thomas King’s Truth & Bright Water (1999), American writer Howard Frank Mosher’s On Kingdom Mountain (2007), and American writer Jim Lynch’s Border Songs (2009). The three authors describe the peoples and places in the northeastern, middle and northwestern border regions of the USA and Canada. The novels address important border-oriented aspects such as indigeneity, the borderlands as historic territory and as utopian space, border crossing and transcendence, post-9/11 security issues, social interaction along the border, and gender specifics. The interpretation also examines the meaning of border imaginaries, border conceptualizations, and the theme of resistance and subversion.

They Aren’t, Until I Call Them

In the story of the three baseball umpires, two novice umpires compete in boasting how they respect «truth» and the way things «really» are. One says, «I call them the way I see them»; the other, trying to trump this remark, responds, «I call them the way they are». Then enters the third, most seasoned umpire, saying, «They aren’t, until I call them».
This book deals with two widely argued issues in literature criticism today, performativity and subjectivity. How do people become who they are? What scripts do they follow when they «do» gender, race, and sexuality? Tying into speech act theories and subjectivity theories, as well as gender, race, and sexuality studies, the author explores – through the close reading of several American texts – the many ways words make «things» in literature.
