Adoleszenz, Geschlecht, Identität

Queere Konstruktionen in Romanen nach der Jahrtausendwende

Series:

Nadine Seidel

Mediatizing Secular State

Media, Religion and Politics in Contemporary Poland

Series:

Damian Guzek

The book provides an empirically based analysis of changes on how various political and denominational actors seek to influence the Church and state relationship, as well as how we understand the idea of the secular state. A set of case studies shows how and why changes in the coverage of the secular state and Church-state relations have followed the dynamics of media logic. By establishing a grounded theory based on media content, legal regulations and political party programs in the years 1989–2015 as well as a current survey, the author throws new light on the theory of mediatization. The book demonstrates that the disseminated idea of the secular state is largely a result of the adaptation of both political and religious representatives to a dynamically changing media logic.

"The book is the first study of this kind showing the Polish perspective. It is an interesting and important source of information for those who want to trace the media picture of relations between the Polish state and the institution of the Roman Catholic Church, representing the largest religious community in Poland."

Ceremonial Storytelling

Ritual and Narrative in Post-9/11 US Wars

Series:

Frank Usbeck

US society has controversially debated civil-military relationships and war trauma since the Vietnam War. Civic activists today promote Indigenous warrior traditions as role models for non-Native veteran reintegration and health care. They particularly stress the role of ritual and narrative for civil-military negotiations of war experience and for trauma therapy. Applying a cultural-comparative lens, this book reads non-Native soldiers’ and veterans’ life writing from post-9/11 wars as «ceremonial storytelling.» It analyzes activist academic texts, «milblogs» written in the war zone, as well as «homecoming scenarios.» Soldiers’ and veterans’ interactions with civilians constitute jointly constructed, narrative civic rituals that discuss the meaning of war experience and homecoming.

Teaching Spivak—Otherwise

A Contribution to the Critique of the Post-Theory Farrago

Series:

Jerry D. Leonard

Grounded in the revolutionary Marxist view that "theory … becomes a material force when it has seized the masses," Teaching Spivak—Otherwise: A Contribution to the Critique of the Post-Theory Farrago activates the practice of critique as a mode of "teaching otherwise" for transformative social change. Taking the post-theory teachings of Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak as its central focus, author Jerry D. Leonard meticulously unpacks Spivak’s fashionably dense writings and "talks." His analyses reveal that what passes for "radical" thought in the dominant humanities is actually a sustained mystification that attempts to erase class struggle and class critique from the realm of knowledge. One of the book’s most significant interventions is its powerful appropriation of "close reading" as a strategy in the broader project of ideology critique. Teaching Spivak—Otherwise does for Spivak what Frederick Engels did for Eugen Dühring and Mao Zedong did for Deng Xiaoping: it teaches the class lesson that Spivak’s thought is a complexly obscured articulation of "new" ruling class ideas in what Lenin called "a farrago of contrasting principles …, an urge to rise verbally to the higher spheres and conceal the conflicts between the historical groups of the population with phrases." This book will be a useful supplementary text for undergraduate and graduate courses in contemporary critical theory and pedagogy.

More than a thousand years pass between the fall of the Western Roman Empire and the discovery of America. In that long stretch of time, European food cultures at first very distant from one another begin to interact in ways that will come to transform all of them. With the circulation of men, products, words, and ideas, the continent forges a substantially unified identity. This volume takes the reader on a journey among ingredients, recipes, customs, and choices as we move in the company of kings and peasants, distinguished figures – noblemen, ambassadors, bishops, and popes – scientists and literati, cooks and artisans, and common men and women (a few, anyway). In other words, this is a journey that weaves its ways throughout the whole of society. Food – whether desired or denied, relished or rejected, global or local – is our key for understanding the slow road toward a unified European culture.
