A Biblical Study of Panikkar’s Early Theology

Since its publication in 1964, The Unknown Christ of Hinduism has been singled out for praise as the quintessential example of Raimon Panikkar’s engagement with theology of religions. Controversies over the real meaning of the title and the author’s remark that Christ is unknown to Hindus and a fortiori to Christians have been waged among generations of scholars. Refusing to isolate Panikkar’s concerns with the Hindu-Christian dialogue from much larger theological and biblical debates occurring in the period before and during the Vatican Council II, this book suggests that the unknown Christ of Christianity is the plastic representation of an insufficient degree of universality of the Church. Rejecting traditional interpretations that identify a gulf between the first and the second edition of The Unknown, this book argues for a continuity in Raimon Panikkar’s thought.

This book is for people who are interested in Luke and the law, and specifically in Acts 15. For all students writing papers related to Luke and the law or Acts 15 and especially for professors who are teaching Acts, this is a book they must consider. This work provides a new approach to reading Acts 15. It reads both Peter’s and James’ speeches in Acts 15 in light of Jesus’ view of the law in the Gospel of Luke. For example, this book proposes that Peter’s reference to God’s cleansing the heart of the Gentile believers, in conjunction with his speaking of the Jews’ inability to do the law in Acts 15:9-10, should be understood against Luke 11: 37-41. This book also proposes that in James’ use of Amos 9:11-12 (in Acts 15:16-17), he recalls Jesus’ stress upon his name in Luke 24. In Luke 24:47-48, Jesus expounds that the Scriptures (the law of Moses, prophets, and Psalms) speak of the mission of the early church, simply that repentance for the forgiveness of sins, on the basis of his name, will be preached.

This book is a critical analysis of how Maasai informants read some selected Old Testament texts that are thought to have an appeal to people with semi/nomadic ways of life. The Maasai is a Nilotic ethnic group of semi/nomadic pastoralists living in the northern Tanzania, and southern Kenya, East Africa. The book focuses on the parallels between the Maasai and biblical concepts of nomadic lifestyle. On the one hand, the semi/nomadic heritage of the Maasai faces severe cultural and political difficulties when encountering East African modern ways of life. On the other, the ancient Israel actually experienced the opposite, seeing a strengthening of semi/nomadic ways of life. Therefore, the book demonstrates the potentials of the supposed parallels between the two by allowing the experiences of the ancient Israel to contribute to strengthen the semi/nomadic ways of life, a key aspect of traditional Maasai values into the contemporary East African context.

El estudio de la abstracción ha sido uno de los tópicos más estudiados dentro de la historia del tomismo, donde se la ha interpretado como el término específico que designa el proceso intelectual según el cual el hombre conoce una realidad inteligible partiendo desde los datos sensibles; o bien, mediante el cual capta determinadas características de un objeto sin considerar otras. De un modo particular, la exégesis del siglo XX en adelante añadió sobre esta interpretación un cariz particularmente epistemológico al colocar la abstracción como la causa de la distinción de las ciencias especulativas y sus objetos.

El presente libro tiene como objetivo demostrar que el término posee en Tomás un significado más amplio que el expuesto en tanto es también utilizado en numerosos casos para designar una propiedad de las esencias de las cosas. Esta abstracción de las esencias resulta un elemento clave dentro del corpus metafísico del Aquinate ya que la operación intelectual depende de ella como de su causa formal. De este modo, lo que queda expuesto es el sentido analógico que posee el término abstractio en la obra de Tomás y sus implicancias. A su vez, este descubrimiento se vuelve relevante toda vez que las interpretaciones más difundidas hasta el momento han puesto demasiado énfasis en la faz intelectual dificultando la interpretación de algunos textos importantes.

De esta manera, la obra constituye una pieza importante para avanzar en la comprensión de un tema central en la filosofía tomasiana.

This book presents the results of comprehensive study on the history of Soviet Armenia and the Armenian Church in the years 1920-32. Through documents uncovered in the Communist Party Archive in Yerevan and the Georgian Historical Archive, press antireligious propaganda, oral testimonies, and biographical interviews conducted by the author, The Armenian Church in Soviet Armenia expands the discussion on the history of the Armenian Church in the 20th century, especially regarding the relations between the spiritual leaders of the Armenian Church and the Bolsheviks. In accordance with stipulations laid out by the Central Committee in consultation with the GPU, Khoren Muradbekian was elected as the Catholicos of All Armenians. His election was the principal reason behind the schism inside the Church– which, especially in the Armenian diaspora, divided not only clergy, but laymen themselves. These divisions, even after hundred years, are still vivid in Armenian society.

This book elucidates the dynamism of culture and how cultural expressions are often intertwined with religious expressions. The Catholic Church, while conscious of profound cultural diversities of her members, earnestly seeks to inculturate the gospel message in different cultures for a better expressed, experienced, and lived Catholicism in the modern world. Relational and theological expressions of Eucharistic communion increase in wealth and meaning when Christians of different races and cultures are able to understand the global call to unity and interconnectivity in the world today. Relating the clear theological and relational aspects of Eucharistic communion to the traditional rituals of communion expressed in Igbo culture, enriches both the encountered faith and lived culture. The rituals of communion in Igbo tradition studied, Emume Oji (Ritual Breaking of the Kolanut), Iri Ji Ohuru (New Yam Festival), and Igba Oriko (Reconciliation Ceremony), are still prevalent and valued among the Igbo people. These rituals pilot and determine the wellbeing of present and future generations of Igbo people. An integrative study of liturgy, faith, and culture, establishes the theological and relational aspects of both the traditional rituals of communion in Igbo culture and the Christian understanding of Eucharistic communion, for a truly inculturated Eucharistic theology.

Face aux nouveaux et nombreux défis de la mondialisation, Jean-Marc Ferry actualise l’ancienne idée philosophique du cosmopolitisme dont les principes sont considérés comme une alternative adaptée à notre monde multipolaire. Le présent ouvrage propose d’en retracer l’architecture : ses aspects essentiels et ses défis. Il montre qu’à partir de sa philosophie de la communication, Ferry analyse d’abord la manière dont fonctionnent les sociétés contemporaines en faisant de l’identité reconstructive sa catégorie organisatrice.

Préoccupé depuis les années 2000 par « l’histoire de l’humanité européenne », il applique ensuite cette identité contemporaine à « l’identité européenne reconstructive ». Son cosmopolitisme processuel tente de concrétiser l’idée philosophique du cosmopolitisme kantien dont la structure juridique de base s’adapte à l’échelle de l’Union Européenne. Il s’agit de construire une « unité de survie » transnationale puisque l’« unité de survie » nationale, bien que nécessaire, n’est plus suffisante. Il serait donc possible de prolonger l’idée cosmopolitique interprétée dans l’histoire européenne vers d’autres entités politiques d’envergure continentale. A condition, toutefois, que les pays concernés parviennent d’abord et avant tout à former une « unité de survie » nationale indispensable à toute « unité de survie » transnationale.
