Writing the Self, Writing the Nation

Romantic Selfhood in the Works of Germaine de Staël and Claire de Duras

Stacie Allan

The French Revolution represents a pivotal moment within the history of personhood in France, where gender and national differences provided the foundations of society. As such, these constructs feature as ideological battlegrounds in the search for identity and self-expression within the Romantic literature published between the revolutions of 1789 and 1830. This book considers Germaine de Staël’s and Claire de Duras’s depictions of men’s and women’s shared and diverging lived experiences to offer an innovative transnational perspective on the usually male-focused mal du siècle. Its methodology combines feminist revisions of the novel, situated reading practices, and life writing research with an intersectional approach to gender and nationhood. This framework presents a dialectical relationship between sameness and difference on formal and thematic levels that challenges the construction and enforcement of binaries within early nineteenth-century legislation, discourse, and culture. Beyond Staël’s and Duras’s intertextual relationship, this book promotes the importance of an understudied period in literary scholarship, clarifies women’s role within French Romanticism, and explores the tense relationship between the self and the nation.

Textos «ilegibles»

Collection and Translation in French Print Networks, 1476–1576

Edited by Catherine Emerson

This book brings together essays from scholars working on the first century of French print culture, with a particular focus on the networks formed by authors, editors, translators and printers in the earliest years of print technology. The volume is structured around the themes of collection and translation. The first part of the book examines the gathering of sources, the creation of anthologies and collections and the efforts of collectors to create a legacy. The second part deals with translation and the ways in which editors present a text to a new audience, either in a different language, as part of a different culture or through images that translate the text visually. Together, the essays raise important questions about early modern French culture, revealing how texts are the products both of the networks that create them and of those that distribute, read and interpret them after publication.

Against Repression

Surrealism, Sublimation and the Recuperation of Desire

Klem James

Surrealism has been criticised for having been too steeped in idealism and poetry to have been an effective force for political and personal emancipation in the early twentieth century. The movement, its detractors claim, was conservative in outlook, denying the sexual and material poles of existence, and preferring sublimation over the direct expression of (and engagement with) base desire. These arguments are carefully re-examined and re-evaluated in this book, which focuses on the movement’s artistic and political activities of the late 1930s, 1940s and beyond.

The book reveals how a more transgressive strand of Surrealist art and thought emerged in France in this period, a strand that is underpinned by an increasing openness to sexual alterity. Surrealist works from this time are considered in terms of their more subversive aspect and shown not only to validate erotic desire but also to challenge the certainties (socio-political, personal) of their audience. Surrealist art and literature are thus presented as actively countering the repressive effects of a socially conservative France, aspiring not only to be at the vanguard of social change but of a change of consciousness in society.

Penser le fragment littéraire / Studies on a fragment in literature

Edited by Jolanta Rachwalska von Rejchwald and Anna Krzyzanowska

A literary work can be considered as a place under the influence of opposing forces. On the one hand, there are deconstructing forces which, by affecting the structure, interfere with its continuity; on the other hand, there are counteracting forces that seek to connect separated parts to create a new unity. The contributions in this book examine the formal and semantic functioning of a fragment in French and Francophone literature. They prove that the decomposition of form does not cause the destruction of the work, but releases all its creative potential.

Penser le fragment en linguistique / Studies on a fragment in linguistics

Edited by Anna Krzyzanowska and Jolanta Rachwalska Von Rejchwald

This book proposes reflections on the text, which we treat as a product of discursive activity that we observe at various levels of its architecture - both at the sequence level and in relation to the global structure. Our research focuses on fragmentation and fragment, two important concepts that we capture here not as a destructive factor for the whole structure according to the canonical order or norm, but as an invitation to reconsider the hidden potential of a once fixed structure.

Mining, Return Migration and Gender in the Peruvian Andes

Belonging in a Transforming «Comunidad Campesina»

Ana Echeverría-Scharfenberg

This ethnographic book deals with mining, return migration and gender in a Peruvian comunidad campesina, i.e. peasant community. This comunidad lived multiple transformations due to a mining project. As one of the changes, the comunidad invented a system of two membership categories. Thereby, they changed their concept of belonging and excluded some of those who thought of themselves as members. Drawing on fieldwork, participant observation, interviews and life stories, the author analyses how the comunidad interpreted the mining-induced transformations, how the concept and functions of their comunidad were altered and why belonging became such a central issue. She shows how belonging is a marker of social hierarchies and influenced by gender inequalities.

Convivencias, malvivencias y diálogos (im)posibles

Literaturas indígenas de Sudamérica e Isla de Pascua

Edited by Hans Fernández
