The Rise of the South in American Thought and Education: The Rockefeller Years (1902-1917), and Beyond documents the rise—both real and imaginary—of the South in American thought and education at the close of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century. The South’s main appeal to industrial statesmen like the Rockefellers, their philanthropic work a focus of the book, was what it symbolized to them at a time when traditional elites in both regions were facing a frightening new array of social and political conditions, much of them pursuant to the country’s very real industrial "takeoff." Those who presided over the nation’s economy understood the need for orderly change that would balance the demands (and dislocations) of modernization with America’s most cherished traditions. They viewed the reactionary South and its nationalization as an important counterweight to centrifugal tendencies in the North, including the rapid growth of cities and their "Romanization" by a flood tide of property less, uneducated, and discontented southern and eastern European immigrants. The traditional emphasis in the South on vocational education (the Christian ethic of work as redemption, not the Republican one of free labor), country life and living, racial segregation, and the centrality of nature study as a source of both science and religion, added up to a coherent vision that responded to "undesirable" economic and social change in the urban North. The survival of Southern cultural traditions, as antiquated as they were, posed no threat to the plans of corporate progressives; indeed, as the book argues, it facilitated them, and nowhere more so than in the field of education. Modern educators wanting to put into historical context relations of class, race, and ethnicity as they persist in today’s schools will find much here to inform them, putting to rest, for example, false distinctions in the history of school reform between a liberal-progressive North and a conservative and reactionary South. This book will also appeal to a popular audience of Americans curious to understand the illiberal foundations of the modern liberal state.

British New Wave includes several areas of research that suggest interpreting the cinema of the British New Wave in relation to social realism, the construction of the main characters, popular culture and the way New Wave played with film-making. Thanks to an in-depth analysis of key films of this trend, it is possible not only to understand the workings of social realism and examine character creation and their rebellion, but also to explore the intentionality of the utilising New Wave techniques that were known from nouvelle vague. The last chapter of this book is devoted to the most recent references to British New Wave Cinema.
Academic year 2014-15 marked the first year that public school enrollment (preK-12) became majority nonwhite, with the Hispanic/Latino as the largest minority. Significant population shifts have continued to occur, with Latinos now representing 1-in-4 (28%) public school students.
Meanwhile, the public schools are in trouble, with international achievement reaching new lows and where progress for nearly two-thirds of all 4th and 8th graders stagnant and below proficiency levels, now decades old. According to the Nation’s Report Card, students of color rank lowest, with Latinos and African Americans consistently at the bottom.
To understand the history of Latinos in particular, Dr. Noboa-Ríos goes back to recreate the story. Here he relates the dark legacy before and after Plessy, but also upon examining post-Brown challenges that linger. Meanwhile, demography has shifter greatly and the future of the country is now greatly dependent on the academic success of Latino children. Different from the past, this population can no longer be ignored. This is dramatically different from former years, as it represents a new urgency for the nation, one that can no longer be ignored.
As the story of education rapidly unfolds, America’s challenge is now to ensure Latino students excel or the country is in peril. It is important to understand why and how this has occurred to ensure it is rectified for a better and more balanced future for the nation, not just the Latino population.
The general aim of this book is to contribute to a better understanding of metonymy, a phenomenon which still, despite the current upsurge in scholarly attention, remains puzzling in some respects. The theoretical framework of this book is provided by the school of thought commonly known as Cognitive Linguistics. The first part of the book analyses and develops various hypotheses concerning the nature of metonymy advanced in the literature to date. It presents numerous arguments in favour of the conceptual rather than purely linguistic basis of metonymy and shows that metonymy is a ubiquitous phenomenon not only in language but above all in thought. The second part contains a thorough analysis of the constraints to the scope of metonymy and discusses the differences between metonymy and other forms of so-called figurative language. The third part is devoted to the role and importance of metonymy in communication and focuses on the creative functions of metonymy, which have received surprisingly little scholarly attention to date, such as euphemism, vague language, and humour. The fourth part of this book is centred on some problematic issues concerning the distinction between metonymy, metaphor, and synecdoche.

Using the presidential elections of 2008, 2012, and 2016, this book tests a formula that allows us to predict how potential voters lean towards communities in which they feel comfortable—for example, Republican, Democratic, or Independent. These analyses take into account differences in the use of traditional news media vs. social media among media consumers, as well as varying levels of press freedom across national populations.

Aus juristischer Perspektive sind Schlüsselakteure bei der Durchsetzung dieses Prinzips die Verwaltung und die Gerichte, die die maßgeblichen Normen des Umweltschutzes auslegen und anwenden. Speziell im Bereich der Tourismuswirtschaft sind neben den Belangen des Umwelt- und Naturschutzes sowie den Rechten und Interessen der wirtschaftlichen Akteure im Tourismussektor die Rechte und Interessen der Erholung oder Erlebnis suchenden Touristen zu berücksichtigen. Dabei zeigt sich, dass sich die bei der Entscheidungsfindung anzuwendenden Methoden der Ermessensausübung in Deutschland und in Frankreich deutlich unterscheiden.

As cognitive scientists continue to probe into the nature of the human mind, it is increasingly clear that research into cognition cannot be dissociated from the context in which our mental activity occurs. This cultural biography tells the story of Birmingham World editor Emory O. Jackson. During his 35-year career in Alabama, he waged numerous sustained civil-rights campaigns for the franchise, equal educational opportunities, and justice for the victims of police brutality and bombings. The semiweekly newspaper was central to his advocacy. Jackson wrote editorials and columns that documented injustices and urged legislative and legal action in an effort to secure civil rights for Black Alabamians. His body of work, grounded in protest and passion, was part of the long tradition of the Black Press as an instrument to agitate for social and political change. Jackson also was a frequent speaker at NAACP branches, colleges, and churches. He was known as a commanding, even fiery, speaker who stressed first-class citizenship. Issues explored in the book demonstrate an assertion of constitutional rights in post-World War II America and a remarkable resilience. Editor Emory O. Jackson, the Birmingham World, and the Fight for Civil Rights in Alabama, 1940-1975 is the first scholarly analysis of his work and as such contributes to scholarship on the Civil Rights Movement in Alabama and the nation.
