Language Revitalization

Insights from Thailand

This volume reports on programs to revitalize and maintain languages of Thailand, with a particular focus on small enclave languages and school-based revitalization programs. Issues of language status, cultural heritage and identity are explored. The approximately 70 languages of Thailand belong to five language families: Tai (24), Austroasiatic (23), Austronesian (3), Sino-Tibetan (18) and Hmong-Mien (2). Currently, fifteen of these languages are classified as seriously endangered. This volume discusses language revitalization efforts involving six Mon-Khmer groups (Maniq, Chong, Nyah Kur, So, Mlabri, Lavue); four Thai-related groups (Phetburi western central Thai, Phutai, Lao, Nyaw); two Austronesian groups (Moklen, Patani Malay); and one Tibeto-Burman group (Bisu). The book provides a framework and model for future developments in revitalizing Thailand’s indigenous languages.

Licensing of Vowel Length in Czech

This book presents a morphosyntactic account of vowel length in contemporary Czech. The present approach is strictly decompositional on both the phonological and the morphosyntactic side. It assumes prosodic affixes in contemporary Czech. The focus is on prosodic affixes which realize morphosyntactic parts of diminutives and hypocoristics.

La plupart des rencontres scientifiques de ces vingt dernières années jouent sur les contrastes, or une histoire contemporaine ou encore une « géographie » des idées linguistiques du présent montre que la diversité et la profusion de ces modèles permettent aussi de tracer un fil continu dont les extrêmes sont certes très contrastés.

Par ailleurs, les collaborations autour du couple texte/discours, entre disciplines les plus diverses, apparaissent désormais comme légitimes, ce qui permet d’esquisser des directions de travail en vue d’un renouvellement des heuristiques et des problématiques. Dans cet ouvrage, il s’agit plutôt d’étudier des observables nouveaux, de proposer des outils méthodologiques rénovés et de faire ressortir des catégories descriptives innovantes.

Cette réflexion sur le français techno-scientifique qui s’adresse à des étudiants universitaires, à des professionnels ainsi qu’à des spécialistes en linguistique appliquée, en traduction et interprétariat et/ou en langues modernes, parmi tant d´autres, a un objectif essentiellement pragmatique : favoriser l’acquisition des compétences, des savoirs et des savoir-faire dans ce domaine de spécialité. En définitive, contribuer à l’efficacité des échanges communicatifs en français techno-scientifique répondant de cette manière à de nouveaux besoins d’une société de plus en plus exigeante, concurrentielle et « technologisée ».

A Day in the News

A Stylistic Analysis of Newsspeak

A Day in the News is the linguistic description of a single day in the life of the British press – Wednesday, 19 August 2015. Employing a variety of tools and methods – from multimodality to pragmatics, from close reading to computational stylistics – Morini looks at nine different «journalistic worlds» and their respective «Newsspeaks». The results are often revealing: by providing its readers with an accurate idea of the universe projected by each paper, this study revises many received ideas on the clear-cut boundaries separating «popular» from «highbrow» journalism.

In the process, A Day in the News also sums up more than three decades of work on the language of newspapers, and provides a general analytical method for journalism in the digital age. The three chapters of the book focus, respectively, on the multimodal features of newspapers and their e-editions; on the quantitative prominence accorded to certain wordings and topics in each newspaper; and on the ideological/evaluative slant with which news items are presented and commented. Throughout, the focus is not on some outmoded notion of journalistic style, but on the degrees of proximity or distance presupposed by different formats, layouts and linguistic registers.

This book re-examines Benjamin’s text in a broader context and sheds light on this question, so revealing its true potential for Translation Studies and beyond.

When examined in the light of an ontology of language and translation, Benjamin’s philosophy of language displaces age-old and sterile translation theory debates and re-conceptualises translation theory. This broadens the scope of Translation Studies and allows for the relevance of Benjamin’s theory. It is no longer just one theory among many within translation theory. It instead underlies and relates to all translation theories.

This book is of interest for Translation Studies as much as for Benjamin scholars.

Das Buch präsentiert eine Ausarbeitung und das Testen einer korpuslinguistischen Herangehensweise der Metaphernsuche am Beispiel der Zellenmetaphern in der Biologie und der Gesellschaftslehre. Die vom Autor erarbeitete und weiterentwickelte «Trichter»-Methode kann einen detaillierten Überblick über die Metaphorik eines bestimmten Gegenstandsbereichs aufgrund statistisch repräsentativer Korpora in Form einer empirischen Analyse figurativ gebrauchter Ausdrücke geben. Die Methode ist daher auch für die empirische Erforschung des komplizierten Zusammenhangssystems der inter- und intradisziplinären metaphorischen Konzeptualisierung geeignet.

This book contributes insights into second language (L2) students’ learning of academic genres in English for academic purposes (EAP) writing classes by its focus on the current EAP practice in the context of higher education of China. It presents knowledge construction of genre learning research in L2 writing and English for specific purposes (ESP) genre studies, and reports an in-depth qualitative inquiry into three issues of instruction-based genre learning in an academic writing class: students’ learning process of an academic genre in the community of an EAP writing class, students’ individual factors in the learning process, and genre knowledge development through engagement in genre-focused writing instruction. The book has theoretical implications for learning English for academic purposes as well as for learning English as a foreign language in general. It also has pedagogical implications for genre teaching in EAP at Chinese universities and similar educational contexts.

American Learners of Arabic as a Foreign Language

The Speech Act of Refusal in Egyptian Arabic

American learners of Arabic as a foreign language, a group of learners critically understudied in foreign language research. The book investigates how American learners of Arabic realize the speech act of refusal in Egyptian Arabic in different speech situations, varying by setting, topic, social distance, and interlocutor status. Two groups of learners, one at the intermediate level and the other at the advanced level of Arabic proficiency, and two baseline groups of native speakers of Egyptian Arabic and native speakers of American English participated in the study.

Data were collected using the role-play method, which allowed for the elicitation and analysis of refusals at the discourse level. This type of analysis, which helps us reach a better understanding of the distribution and recycling of refusal strategies over a number of turns to achieve communicative goals, is rarely done in speech act research in general and in Arabic speech act research in particular. This study provides evidence of negative pragmatic transfer from L1 among American learners of Arabic. It also provides evidence that pragmatic transfer occurred more frequently among the advanced learners. The advanced learners, however, exhibited an overall higher level of pragmatic competence than their intermediate counterparts. This book is an excellent resource for instructors of Arabic as a foreign language as well as Arabic textbook writers and curriculum designers.
