This is certainly the case with Sharon Kinoshita’s latest book, once again on Marco Polo. In its small size, it offers much information about this globally famous traveler and the world he lived in or roamed around. Kinoshita first engages with Polo himself and summarizes what we know about him. Then she turns to the Book of the Great Khan to discuss the Italian’s information about the Mongol culture and political and military situation. The third chapter focuses on the wonders Polo observed in the East and then reported about in his book. This is then detailed in the fourth chapter, examining specific aspects such as animals, vegetables, and minerals. While all this has already been discussed in many different ways by scores of previous scholars, the fifth chapter offers fascinating character portraits of significant individuals who mattered for Polo, taking us throughout the Asian continent.
