N2  - Chan Cheong Jan received a Ph.D. in Literature in musicology from Osaka University under the supervision of the late Osamu Yamaguti in 2002. He has conducted fieldwork in rural Malay villagers and has served as a lecturer in the Music Department, Faculty of Human Ecology, Universiti Putra Malaysia for 25 years.
