Alongside providing an inventory of all such verbs in both periods, the author studies the diachronic grammaticalization processes leading ultimately to widespread de-aspectualization in German by the early modern period. The collected corpus provides a basis for distributional, morphological, and semantic analyses within a typological framework that accounts for structural reorganization and changes in the aspect system over time. Apart from the introduction, conclusion, and back matter, three body chapters cover foundational aspect-theoretical terms and approaches, the interaction of aspect and grammaticalization, and aspectualization, and verbal pairs in Old and Middle High German (the corpus analysis).
