Identization of an Original University Model: Community Institutions of Higher Education of Southern Brazil %R 10.3726/PTIHE.012022.0003 %U https://www.peterlang.com/document/1281527 %X The text aims to promote reflection regarding the tensioning related to the identization process of an original university model implemented in Brazil, since the second half of the 20th century, especially in the southern region: the community universities. These are institutions of public non-statal nature, non-profitable, whose major resources originate from tuition fees paid by students and their families and are reverted in favor of teaching, research, and extension programs. Many ambiguities accompany the identization of these institutions, especially in the current context, widely marked by crossings of the mercantilism of education. These universities experience an identity crisis of deep consequences, resulting from the tenuous borders between their purpose originated from the forces of place and the challenges of survival dictated by the predatory logic of capital. The arguments of the text are supported by the theoretical anchors of Alberto Melucci, Milton Santos, Tristan McCowan, and Marta Nussbaum, transitioning through the thematization of the procedural character of institutional identities and the aims and values of a community university towards the common good and the human freedom processes. %K community universities, identization processes, common good, human freedom
