The Belt and Road Initiative

The Belt & Road Initiative (BRI) is perhaps the largest global project of both domestic significance and global import proposed by China in the history of its interactions with the world. Since its unveiling in 2013, BRI has not only been embraced by more than 120 countries spanning across all the continents and endorsed by several dozen international NGOs including UN on one hand; it has been drawing an outcry or resistance by some big powers such as the US and India on the other hand. Why is all this occurring? What are the real intentions, real results, real potential and possible risks, and future fate of BRI? Despite the growingly enormous amount of discourse both mediated and nonmediated including thousands of think tank reports about it both in Chinese and other languages such as English, Russian, German, French, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and so on, relatively little scholarship has been produced on BRI so far. However, the BRI studies could be arguably the newest China/Chinese studies and the newest area/regional/global/globalization studies all in one. Therefore, it is the goal of the present book series to advance knowledge about both China and the world from perspectives of various disciplines such as political science and economics, sociology and anthropology, communication, and so on. While proposed volumes from specific disciplines are desirable, proposed volumes on multi-disciplinary, interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary perspectives are especially welcome in the vetting process. This book series aim to produce both monographs and edited volumes from a variety of disciplinary perspectives such as economic science, political science, communication, sociology and anthropology, and so on and interdisciplinary/trans-disciplinary lenses such as area studies, international/intercultural, and global/globalization studies. This series of monographs is concerned with drama and allied entertainment in a wide variety of kinds in the theatre and on film, television and video screens. The emphasis is on the history and interpretation of dramatic entertainment, performance and production in regular and musical theatre, including music hall and variety stages, in para-theatrical activities, like fairground performance and festivals, and in the silent and sound cinema and on television and video. The series engages particularly with the social, political and economic contexts of drama on past and present stages and screens, considering the work of dramatists, performers, directors, designers, technicians and administrators, and will aim to be very wide-ranging in scope, its subjects spanning Classical, Medieval and Renaissance European drama and theatre, Eastern theatre forms, and international modern drama in its various performance kinds. Within this broad remit, the series hopes to publish historical, critical and theoretical studies, annotated anthologies of critical, theoretical and dramatic texts, and collections of interviews and screenplays.

Printing History and Culture

This series unites the allied fields of global, national and local printing history and print culture, and is therefore concerned not only with the design, production and distribution of printed material but also its consumption, reception, and impact. It includes the histories of the machinery and equipment, of the industry and its personnel, of the printing processes, the design of its artefacts (books, newspapers, journals, fine prints, and ephemera) and with the related arts and crafts, including calligraphy, type-founding, typography and global scripts, papermaking, bookbinding, illustration, and publishing. It also covers the cultural context and environment in which print was produced and consumed. It is with great regret that we announce the death of Dr John Hinks (1946–2024), Series Editor of Printing History and Culture at Peter Lang. John had been ill for a while and was admitted for surgery at the start of April from which he did not recover. John was a sympathetic and conscientious editor as well as an erudite scholar in his own right with a wide-ranging interest in print culture in the eighteenth century, about which he published widely. He was also a popular figure amongst students to whom he was a compassionate and knowledgeable advisor. John possessed that rare skill of wearing his wisdom lightly and sharing it with generosity. More than that he was a kind friend and mentor who provoked affection and will be greatly missed.

Critical Intercultural Communication Studies

Within Communication, culture is broadly understood as a meaning-making process that evidences itself within discourse, mediated forms, and interactional instances to constitute group autonomy. Within that meaning-making process, intercultural communication considers relationships between institutions and their societies, media and their audiences, and peoples and their communities. The formalized study of intercultural communication has always been problematic; like most disciplines and subdisciplines, its usefulness and limitations emerge from the historical context in which it is studied. Developed after World War II, intercultural communication initially served as an applied area of study to train U.S. governmental and business entities for relationships beyond U.S. borders. Then, out of the struggles of the U.S. Civil Rights era, intercultural communication expanded to concern itself with relationships between differing racial and ethnic groups. By the turn of the twentieth century, some intercultural communication scholars had fully embraced studying the differential power relations between nations, communities, and individuals thus catalyzing a body of research known as critical intercultural communication. Now, heading into the middle of the twenty-first century, critical intercultural communication has come into focus as an area of study that emphasizes, explains, and seeks to resolve power relations within specific contexts, applying theories and modes of inquiry suited to contemporary issues understood within their ongoing historical dynamics. As our institutions and their societies, mediated forms and their corresponding audiences, and communities and their members continue to alter and morph, critical intercultural communication adapts to interpret and envision progressive, socially just ways forward. This series, therefore, invites scholarship that challenges status quo cultural constitutions by recognizing and problematizing hegemonic modes of belonging and being. Spanning a range of contexts, critical intercultural communication considers symbolic and performative orders across local, national, hemispheric and transnational circuits. Moreover, this series fosters interdisciplinary conversations that innovate ontological and epistemological forms, advancing a range of systematic intellectual approaches to cultural transformation and validation. The series is particularly interested in works grounded in BIPOC, decolonial, feminist, queer, crip, and/or kink perspectives that construct claims, knowledges, and theories capable of guiding society toward new social justice knowings.

Hybris: Literatura y Cultura Latinoamericanas

Since Ancient Greece and the classical era, philosophers, artists and critics have delved into the relationships between literature and other arts. First it was painting and plastic arts –ut pictura poesis, by Simónides de Ceos and Horacio–, later on music, architecture, theatrical representation, sculpture and already, in modern and contemporary times, photography, cinema, television, the mass media. At present this vast and stimulating field of cultural and artistic hybridizations has been completed with new technologies and all "transmedia narratives", generating concepts and transversal actions attached to digital creation and new communicative realities: touch-media, cross-media, intermediality, transmediality, hypertextuality, multimodality, etc. This collection, Hybris: Latin American Literature and Culture, intends, on the one hand, to investigate in the diachronic sense that these relationships have been emerging in the literary and cultural field, understood as aesthetic, practical, leveling and technical borrowing parameters between arts and, therefore the other, is to reflect from a philosophical, social, cultural and theoretical perspective on the possibilities offered by such hybridizations, always within a Latin American context. In classical mythology, Hybris was the goddess of excess, insolence, the absolute absence of moderation, and evoked the need to go beyond limits. This new concept of Hybris intends to insist on the mythological marks of transgression, erasing borders between the arts, shaking the tendency to subdivision and containment and, at the same time, it also demandings identification with the Latin term hybrida, which alludes to the racial or cultural mixing. Hybridization and symbiosis between arts will therefore be the outlines and contexts in which these studies will be invested. Desde la Antigua Grecia y la época clásica, filósofos, artistas y críticos han profundizado en las relaciones entre la literatura y otras artes. Primero fue la pintura y artes plásticas –ut pictura poesis, de Simónides de Ceos y Horacio–, más adelante la música, la arquitectura, la representación teatral, la escultura y ya, en la época moderna y contemporánea, la fotografía, el cine, la televisión, los mass media. En la actualidad este vasto y estimulante campo de hibridaciones culturales y artísticas se ha completado con las nuevas tecnologías y todas las "narrativas transmedia", generando conceptos y actuaciones transversales anejas a la creación digital y a las nuevas realidades comunicativas: touch-media, cross-media, intermedialidad, transmedialidad, hipertextualidad, multimodalidad, etc. Esta colección, Hybris: Literatura y Cultura Latinoamericanas, pretende, por un lado, indagar en el sentido diacrónico que estas relaciones han ido perfilando en el campo literario y cultural entendidos como parámetros estéticos, prácticos, de nivelación y préstamos técnicos entre artes y, por otro, reflexionar desde una perspectiva filosófica, social, cultural y teórica sobre las posibilidades que ofrecen tales hibridaciones, siempre dentro de un contexto latinoamericano. En la mitología clásica, Hybris era la diosa de la desmesura, la insolencia, la ausencia absoluta de moderación, y evocaba la necesidad de traspasar límites. Este nuevo concepto de Hybris pretende insistir en las marcas mitológicas de la transgresión, borrando fronteras entre las artes, sacudiendo la tendencia a la parcelación y a la contención y, a la vez, reclama también la identificación con el término latino hybrida, que alude a la mezcla de sangre. Hibridación y simbiosis entre artes serán, por tanto, los contornos y contextos en los que se imbricarán estos estudios.

Österreichische Biblische Studien

Die Reihe veröffentlicht Monographien zur Exegese des Alten und Neuen Testaments, zur Auslegungsgeschichte, insbesondere der Patristik, und zur Wirkungsgeschichte. Die Reihe weiß sich der historischen und literaturwissenschaftlichen Methodik verpflichtet, thematisch liegt ein Schwerpunkt auf biblischer Theologie. Mehrere Bände dokumentieren die Tagungen der Arbeitsgemeinschaft deutschsprachiger katholischer Alttestamentlerinnen und Alttestamentler. Die Reihe „Europa in Kontakt: Sprachen, Literatur und Kulturen in Bewegung“ publiziert Forschungsergebnisse der Fächer Germanistik, Romanistik und aus dem Bereich albanologischer Studien. Sie deckt das gesamte Spektrum der genannten Fachbereiche ab und umfasst Monographien und Sammelbände sowie Anthologien, Texteditionen zu einzelnen Autoren mit kritischen Aspekten in den Sprachen Deutsch, Englisch, Italienisch, Französisch, Albanisch sowie Spanisch. Die Reihe gibt einen Einblick in Fragen zu Kultur- und Sprachtransfer und Mehrsprachigkeitserfahrungen sowohl aus literaturwissenschaftlicher als auch aus einer sprach- und übersetzungswissenschaftlichen Perspektive in den genannten Sprachen. Sie vergleicht Sprache und Kultur und betrachtet das Gebiet der Übersetzungswissenschaft als spezielles Untersuchungsfeld. Der methodologische Fokus liegt auf der Rekonstruktion des Verarbeitungsprozesses im literarischen Werk, auf Problemen der Textanalyse bzw. des Textverständnisses und, nicht zuletzt, auf der Interferenz zwischen Sprache, Literatur und anderen künstlerischen und kulturellen Ausdrucksformen. Auf sprachlich- bzw. literarisch-komparatistischem Ansatz basierend soll gezeigt werden, wie die künstlerische Inszenierung oft erfolgreich aus einer imaginären Grammatik schöpft, die ihren klaren Ausdruck, ihre Beschaffenheit und Ursache in einer besonderen Verschmelzung der Perspektiven, der Zeichen und der Sprachen findet.

MeLiS. Medien – Literaturen – Sprachen in Anglistik/Amerikanistik, Germanistik und Romanistik

MeLiS is dedicated to media science, literature and linguistics from a cultural perspective. It also deals with issues derived from anthropology, the media, society, history and aesthetics. The cornerstone of MeLiS is an extended and descriptive interpretation of culture. The ability to decipher specific cultural derivatives and phenomena is dependent on time, space, the relevant context, and the disciplinary environment of the respective observer. MeLiS presents research approaches from various disciplines for discussion. A perspective that transcends trans-disciplinary or national-philological borders and promotes reflective dialogue among the academic disciplines is therefore expressly encouraged. MeLiS ist der kulturwissenschaftlichen Ausrichtung in den Medien-, Literatur- und Sprachwissenschaften verpflichtet. Dies schließt auch anthropologische, mediale, soziale, historische und ästhetische Fragestellungen ein. MeLiS legt einen erweiterten, deskriptiven Kulturbegriff zugrunde. Die Entschlüsselung spezifischer kultureller Erzeugnisse und Phänomene ist abhängig von Zeit, Raum, dem jeweiligen Kontext und dem disziplinären Umfeld des jeweiligen Betrachters. MeLiS stellt Forschungsansätze aus verschiedenen Fachdisziplinen zur Diskussion. Eine transdisziplinäre oder nationalphilologische Grenzen überschreitende Perspektive, die den reflektierten Dialog zwischen den Fachkulturen fördert, ist daher ausdrücklich erwünscht.

Die Monographien und Sammelbände der Reihe befassen sich schwerpunktmäßig mit sowohl kulturhistorischen Aspekten der Literatur und Philosophie der antiken Welt als auch mit Studien zu Poetik und Rhetorik. Die Forschungsschwerpunkte der Herausgeber der Reihe liegen unter anderem auf der Prosopographie, Sprachphilosophie, Dramentheorie, Fabeldichtung und historischen Theologie.

Die Reihe Schriften zur empirischen Wirtschaftsforschung publiziert wissenschaftliche Arbeiten, die volks-, regional-, finanz- und betriebswirtschaftliche Fragestellungen anhand statistisch-ökonometrischer Verfahren behandeln. «Comparatism and Society» is an interdisciplinary collection which considers literature, the arts and the humanities in a close interaction with the evolution of society and the history of ideas. Although open to a wide range of methodologies, it nevertheless favours the perspective of cross-analysis, convinced that the objective of all research should be to reach beyond the limits of linguistic, national and disciplinary borders. Comparatism and Society aims to increase contacts between university researchers and those interested in sharing results and disseminating them to a wider audience. « Comparatisme et Société » est une collection interdisciplinaire qui envisage la littérature, les arts et les sciences humaines dans une interaction étroite avec l’évolution de la société et de l’histoire des idées. Ouverte au pluralisme des méthodes d’analyse, elle privilégie toutefois la perspective des regards croisés, dans la conviction que l’objectif inhérent à toute recherche se doit de dépasser le cadre des frontières linguistiques, nationales et disciplinaires.
