Restoration Drama

This series attempts to illustrate the richness and diversity of Restoration drama, a thriving theatrical production which has been long overshadowed by the brilliance of the Age of Shakespeare. The aim of the collection is to bring to light dramatic texts that have not attracted much critical attention but display the most popular generic formulas of the time and introduce a wide array of suggestive topics. The series consists of modern spelling, fully annotated editions, complete with textual commentary, glosses, as well as historical, cultural and literary references. Each of the volumes includes a critical introduction which places the text in context, discussing aspects such as authorship, the play’s response to the historical circumstances of the time, its use of theatrical conventions and stage history.

This series presents innovative research work in the dramaturgies of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Its main purpose is to re-assess the complex relationship between textual studies, cultural and/or performance aspects at the dawn of this new multicultural millennium. The series offers discussions of the link between drama and multiculturalism (studies of “minority” playwrights –– ethnic, Aboriginal, gay, and lesbian), reconsiderations of established playwrights in the light of contemporary critical theories, studies of the interface between theatre practice and textual analysis, studies of marginalized theatrical practices (circus, vaudeville, etc.), explorations of emerging postcolonial drama, research into new modes of dramatic expressions and comparative or theoretical drama studies. Son objectif essentiel est de ré-examiner la relation complexe entre études de textes, aspects culturels et/ou performatifs à l’aube d’un millénaire multiculturel. This series of monographs is concerned with drama and allied entertainment in a wide variety of kinds in the theatre and on film, television and video screens. The emphasis is on the history and interpretation of dramatic entertainment, performance and production in regular and musical theatre, including music hall and variety stages, in para-theatrical activities, like fairground performance and festivals, and in the silent and sound cinema and on television and video. The series engages particularly with the social, political and economic contexts of drama on past and present stages and screens, considering the work of dramatists, performers, directors, designers, technicians and administrators, and will aim to be very wide-ranging in scope, its subjects spanning Classical, Medieval and Renaissance European drama and theatre, Eastern theatre forms, and international modern drama in its various performance kinds. Within this broad remit, the series hopes to publish historical, critical and theoretical studies, annotated anthologies of critical, theoretical and dramatic texts, and collections of interviews and screenplays.

Language and Forensics

Language and Forensics is a trans- and inter-disciplinary book series dedicated to exploring the complex relationship between language and forensic practice. Bridging theoretical foundations and applied research, the series includes contributions that range from introductory manuals and historical overviews of the field to in-depth analyses of real-world forensic cases and cross-national comparisons of linguistic methodologies. Reflecting the diverse nature of forensic linguistics, the series features three main types of volumes: theoretical works introducing specific subfields (such as audio analysis or textual comparison), applied research addressing linguistic challenges in forensic contexts (e.g., authorship attribution, voice comparison), and edited collections emerging from collaborative research or academic conferences. The Modernist Revolution in World Literature

In the stormy time period approximately between the Paris Commune in 1871 and the revolutionary events in May 1968, or between the conclusion of the American Civil War and the withdrawal of American troops from Vietnam, the rise and fall of international modernism was crucial to all historical, political, and intellectual de-velopments around the world. By the time the United States had emerged from its military involvement in Indo-China, the modernist movement had given way to postmodernism. This series investigates the development of international modern-ism in the half century leading up to World War I and its disintegration in the fol-lowing fifty years. High modernism claimed that it represented a break with corrupt values of previous cultural traditions, but we now think that this very drive to “make it new” is itself derivative. What are the roots and characteristics of modernism? How did the philosophical and pedagogical system supporting modernism develop? Is mod-ernism, perhaps, not a liberating movement but a device to shield high culture from rising democratic vulgarization? What is the role of modernism in postcolonial struggles? Where does feminism fall in the modernist agenda? How do changing systems of patronage and the economy of art influence modernism as an enor-mously expanded reading public becomes augmented by cinema, radio, and televi-sion? Sprache in der Gesellschaft

Das sprachliche Universum ist äußerst facettenreich und ausdifferenziert. Sprache, so zeigt die moderne Linguistik, zerfällt in die Sprachen einzelner Gruppen und Medien, geprägt von Tradition und Innovation, von Handlungsfeldern und Weltanschauungen. Sprache signalisiert, was als Wirklichkeit erfahren wird, wie man diese beschreibt und ordnet, um sich und andere zu orientieren. Die Reihe Sprache in der Gesellschaft hat das Ziel, Bedingungen sprachlichen Handelns in unterschiedlichen Kommunikationssphären und Praxisfeldern zu beleuchten – auch um gesellschaftlich relevantes Wissen auf hohem fachlichen Niveau anzubieten. Es gilt, das Geflecht der sprachlichen Normen und Regeln zu erforschen, die eine soziale Wirklichkeit erzeugen, stabilisieren oder verändern. Diese Normen und Regeln zeigen sich in der Analyse von Situationen und Gattungen; sie werden bei der Erforschung von kommunikativen Strategien offenbar; und sie ergeben sich aus den Zwängen des jeweiligen Mediums (Zeitung, Radio, Fernsehen, Netzmedien). Die einzelnen in dieser Reihe veröffentlichten Arbeiten analysieren – primär auf linguistischer Grundlage, jedoch mit einem programmatischen Interesse an der Verbindung von Sprach- und Medienwissenschaft auf dem Weg zu einer interdisziplinären Medienforschung – ergiebige Schnittstellen und Spannungsfelder der mündlichen und schriftlichen Kommunikation: zwischen Wissenschaft und Anwendung, Öffentlichkeit und Privatheit, Norm und Variation. This Dublin-based company was formed in 1998. Its programme embraces contemporary writing for and about the theatre and about other performing arts. We believe that drama is playing an ever-increasing role in society today and that enjoyment of the theatre, both professional and amateur, currently plays a central part, for example in Irish culture. Disability, Media, Culture

Globally today, television, film and the internet comprise the principal sources of cultural consumption and engagement. Despite this, these areas have not featured strongly in the cultural study of disability. This book series will provide the first specific outlet for international scholars of disability to present their work on these topics. The series will build a body of work that brings together critical analysis of disability and impairments in media and culture. The series expands the work currently undertaken in literary studies on disability by using media and cultural theory to understand the place of disability and impairment in a range of media and cultural forms. The series encourages the development of work on disabled people in the media, within the media industries and in the wider cultural sphere. Whilst film and television analysis will be central to this series, we also encourage work on disability in other media, including journalism, radio, the internet and gaming. We welcome proposals from media studies: narrative constructions of disability; technical aspects of media production; disability, the economy and society; the impact of social media and gaming on disabled identities; and the role of architecture and image. Cultural studies are also encouraged: the uses of disabled and chronically ill bodies, ‘cripping culture’, corporeal projections in culture, intersectional identities, advertising, and the uses of cultural theory in furthering understandings of ableism and disablism. All proposals and manuscripts will be rigorously peer reviewed. The language of publication is English, although we welcome submissions from around the world and on topics that may take as their focus non-English media. We welcome new proposals for monographs and edited collections.
