In the different areas of the artificial - defined as the attempt to reproduce natural objects or processes by means of the available technology - researchers and designers often work within their disciplines with little or no information about research being carried out in other areas. Bioengineers, for instance, know little about the problems of Artificial Intelligence researchers, while roboticians often neglect the efforts of medical engineering, etc. The Yearbook of the Artificial discusses current theories, projects and models from a wide range of areas without going into too many technical details. The main assumption is that there are common logical and methodological problems for all disciplines that are concerned with the reproduction of natural objects and processes. The Yearbook provides a forum for all of them, and covers areas such as bioengineering, robotics, A.I., artificial neural networks, artificial life, multimedia, the history of technology, communications, art and music. Under the aegis of the LABEX ICCA (LABoratoire d’EXcellence ICCA) research centre, this collection contains the results of research into various cultural industries, in both traditional fields – such as the film industry, television, music or print publishing – and more recent fields such as video or video games. It focuses on an interdisciplinary perspective for studying the means of mediation and promotion, the consumption practices and the transformations induced by underlying trends such as globalisation and digitisation, which radically change both the processes for creating content and the ways of funding and distributing the content produced. This interdisciplinary book series examines the use of digital technology in education. It is part of an unfolding educational agenda around technology-enhanced learning, where technology is both blended as a tool within existing pedagogies and drives new pedagogies. The series looks to the future, to emerging technologies and methodologies. Areas of interest include educational futures and future pedagogies, pedagogy and globalization (including MOOC), mobile learning, edtech, technology in assessment, the use of AI in education, and technology and face-to-face blended learning. The series encourages proposals for short-format books (between 25,000 and 50,000 words) with the aim of responding quickly to this rapidly changing field. Cities are inherently places of communication, meeting spaces for interaction and/or observation. The nature of any communication venue is altered by social and technological circumstances and the urban environment is altered, in turn, by changes in communication patterns. We need to understand relationships among these significant forces – communication, technology, and the urban, suburban, rural environment – as they shape each other. Communication systems and urban social systems can be examined at multiple levels as scholars and planners examine interaction in public spaces, neighborhood communication patterns, and urban systems of transport. The focus of this series is on social relationships in a swiftly changing communication environment. Media coverage of urban issues, conflict resolution and contested urban space, visual communication, rhetorical dimensions of urban life, film and the city, journalism, the ethnic press, local media and public policy are just some areas of relevance. Volumes in this series provide a forum to explore and discuss the challenges created by the intersection of communication and urban life, focusing on what communication scholarship has to offer for enhanced understanding of cities and for the development of a public policy that takes into account communication needs and practices.

Cultural Memories is the publishing project of the Institute of Languages, Cultures and Societies, University of London. The Institute is international in scope and promotes innovative research on interdisciplinary approaches to memory. This series supports the Institute by furthering original research in the global field of cultural memory studies. In particular, it seeks to challenge a monumentalizing model of memory in favour of a more fluid and heterogeneous one, where history, culture and memory are seen as complementary and intersecting. Media Ecology is a field of inquiry defined as ‘the study of media as environments’. Within this field, the term «medium» can be defined broadly to refer to any human technology or technique, code or symbol system, invention or innovation, system or environment. Media ecology scholarship typically focuses on how technology, symbolic form, and media relate to communication, consciousness, and culture – past, present and future. This series publishes research that furthers the formal development of media ecology as a field of study. Works in this series bring a media ecology approach to bear on specific topics of interest, including theoretical or philosophical investigations concerning the nature and effects of media or a specific medium. Further, this series also publishes books that examine new and emerging technologies and the contemporary media environment, as well as historical studies of media, technology, modes, and codes of communication. Images of Elsewhere

Flying saucers first appeared in the late 1940s, in the aftermath of the Second World War. They immediately became the subject of fascination, and their mystery has persisted. They can be understood through three lenses, that of science and technology, popular culture and, at the human level, personal experience. In general, approaches to flying saucers concentrate either on military and space hardware, or on science fiction and film, or on religious and occult ways of thinking. This mini-series brings these different perspectives into conversation for the first time, tracing the appearances of UFOs and their development. It explores how machines and humans learn to think together, producing new objects in a world that is dominated by technology and yet continually escaping our control.

This series seeks to enhance our understanding of visual communication and it explores the role of visual communication in culture. Topics of interest include visual perception and cognition; signs and symbols; typography and image; research on graph ic design, use of visual imagery in education. On a cultural level, research on visual media analysis and critical methods that examine the larger cultural messages imbedded in visual images is welcome. This series is designed to encourage philosophers to explore new directions of research in philosophy. The underlying premise of the series is that contemporary philosophical research is impeded by an understanding of the intellectual division of labor according to which philosophy is conceived of as separate from the natural and social sciences, the arts and humanistic disciplines. Science is impoverished by the neglect of immediate attention to the metaphysical and moral questions posed by scientific developments. The arts and humanistic disciplines are also impoverished by a lack of sufficient attention to the philosophical implication of innovation in each of these areas. Philosophy for its part is in danger of grinding away on outdated problems posed by the scientific and artistic developments of past centuries. The usual remedy for this situation, inter-disciplinary work, typically falls far short of the needed re-integration of philosophy, the sciences, the arts and humanistic disciplines. The pressing problems of contemporary civilization, particularly the problems that concern the relationship between science, technology and ethical and political values, we believe, can only be adequately explored by a re-integration of philosophy with other fields. This series seeks to call attention to itself by meeting high standards of scholarship and producing work of unquestionable merit. Works in this series should contribute to the re-integration of philosophy with the natural and social sciences, technology, the arts or humanities by challenging philosophical preconceptions that block the re-integration of philosophy with other disciplines. Works in this series should contribute to the re-integration of philosophy with the natural and social sciences, technology, the arts or humanities by challenging philosophical preconceptions that block the re-integration of philosophy with other disciplines. The underlying premise of the series is that contemporary philosophical research is impeded by an understanding of the intellectual division of labor according to which philosophy is conceived of as separate from the natural and social sciences, the arts and humanistic disciplines. Science is impoverished by the neglect of immediate attention to the metaphysical and moral questions posed by scientific developments. The arts and humanistic disciplines are also impoverished by a lack of sufficient attention to the philosophical implication of innovation in each of these areas. This series, therefore, opts for a multidisciplinary approach to the problem of risk, which involves the scientific community as much as the political world and civil society. It publishes monographs and collected papers, mainly in French or English. Cette collection a pour principal objectif de traiter les différents aspects de la problématique des risques associés aux activités humaines. Parmi celles-ci, le développement scientifique, technologique et économique s’impose de plus en plus comme un moteur fondamental du changement social. Dans cette perspective, le concept de risque se révèle un outil pertinent d’analyse des processus de transformation sociale. À titre d’exemple, les recherches en génie génétique, de même que l’utilisation civile de technologie militaire, soulèvent inévitablement des questions d’éthique, de santé publique, d’environnement et de gestion des politiques publiques.
