In line with the latest trends within masculinity scholarship, the books in this series deal with representations of masculinities in culture, in general, and literature, in particular. The aim of this series is twofold. On the one hand, it focuses on studies that question traditionally normative representations of masculinities. On the other, it seeks to highlight new alternative representations of manhood, looking for more egalitarian models of manhood in and through literature and culture. Besides literary representations, the series is open to studies of masculinity in cinema, theatre, music, as well as all kinds of artistic and visual representations.

This series presents innovative research work in the dramaturgies of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Its main purpose is to re-assess the complex relationship between textual studies, cultural and/or performance aspects at the dawn of this new multicultural millennium. The series offers discussions of the link between drama and multiculturalism (studies of “minority” playwrights –– ethnic, Aboriginal, gay, and lesbian), reconsiderations of established playwrights in the light of contemporary critical theories, studies of the interface between theatre practice and textual analysis, studies of marginalized theatrical practices (circus, vaudeville, etc.), explorations of emerging postcolonial drama, research into new modes of dramatic expressions and comparative or theoretical drama studies. Cette série présente des travaux de recherche innovateurs dans le domaine de la dramaturgie des XXe et XXIe siècles. Son objectif essentiel est de ré-examiner la relation complexe entre études de textes, aspects culturels et/ou performatifs à l’aube d’un millénaire multiculturel. WGS Pathbreakers

WGS Pathbreakers is a subseries of Women, Gender and Sexuality in German Literature and Culture (https://www.peterlang.com/series/wgl), edited by Helen Finch and Katherine Stone, that seeks to showcase the cultural contribution of women, queer, non-binary, trans and gender non-conforming writers and artists to German studies, making important aesthetic, scholarly and political developments accessible to a wider audience. We welcome new proposals for both: Critical editions, which may include single works, selections from the corpus of an individual author, or multi-author anthologies by, or that offer fresh perspectives on, pathbreaking female, queer and trans culture. Critical editions should have the potential to initiate novel scholarly conversations and include a substantive introductory essay, glossary and contextualising annotations, where appropriate. Translations into English, which may include single works, selections from the corpus of an individual author, or extracts from the output of multiple authors that will serve to illuminate significant issues in the representation of gender and/or sexuality in German-language culture. Each submission should include a rigorous scholarly introduction, as well as a translator’s note or essay, glossary and explanatory annotations, where appropriate. Parallel texts will be considered. In the case of new translations of works with existing English-language editions, proposals should make a cogent case for the shortcomings of previous translations and the added value of the new translation. We welcome enquiries from translators. The series editors are primarily interested in works that merit intensified scholarly attention, but which have been overlooked by conventional publishers, censored or fallen out of print. The subseries therefore reflects our desire for a more diverse understanding of German-language culture for the purposes of research, teaching and performance. Please note that all proposals should provide detail about the intended audience for the proposed volume, including potential non-academic readers and courses where these texts are currently taught or would be taught. Proposals should also clearly articulate the value of the translation or critical edition for contemporary feminist and queer German Studies, taking into account any ethical and pedagogical issues that could impact reception by contemporary audiences. We ask that the volume editor or translator take responsibility for securing the rights to all primary material and covering any costs required for reprinting or translating the work.

Cultural Media Studies

In the past few years, our political, cultural, and media landscapes have cultivated a sharp, notable rise of media activism, more representations of diverse groups and characters, and the need for intersectional approaches to media studies. The #MeToo campaign, the 2017 and 2018 Women’s Marches, Black Lives Matter marches, cross-border anti-feminicide activist marches, immigration marches, and increased representation of diverse sexual identities, racial/ethnic groups, and gender identities are evidence of the need for continued research on cultural media studies topics. The Peter Lang Cultural Media Studies Book Series is accepting book proposals for both proposed book and fully developed manuscripts on a rolling basis for media studies books that explore media production, media consumption, media effects, and media representations of feminism(s), race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and related topics.

The series Regensburg Studies in British and American Languages and Cultures was established in 1971 and publishes studies on the languages, literatures and cultures of North America, the British Isles, as well as the English-speaking regions of Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Caribbean. Within a transhistorical, transnational and interdisciplinary conceptual framework, the monographs in this series have stressed different areas of focus in their engagement with textual, performative, visual, material and virtual forms of representation. Recent subjects of investigation have been, for instance, language variation and varieties of English as well as the representation and enactment of regional, (trans)national and global identities. Violence often takes the form of a catastrophic eruption. However, it also inscribes itself in different ways in the everyday life of society. Literary texts and media discourse are capable of analysing the relations between macro and micro levels of violence as forms of symbolic action. In the process, the critique of violence does not simply address the question of the representation of violence; the question of the violence of representation needs to be pursued as well. The series Signatures of Violence brings together innovative, transdisciplinary approaches to these difficult questions in the field of literary and media studies. Gewalt tritt oft in Form katastrophischer Eruptionen auf. Aber sie schreibt sich auch auf vielfältige Art und Weise in den gesellschaftlichen Alltag ein. Literarische und mediale Texte sind in der Lage, die Beziehungen zwischen Makro- und Mikroebenen von Gewalterscheinungen als symbolische Handlungen zu analysieren. Dabei wirft die Kritik der Gewalt nicht nur die Frage der Darstellung der Gewalt auf; auch der Frage nach der Gewalt der Darstellung muss nachgegangen werden. Cinema and Media Cultures in the Middle East

The purpose of this series is to demarcate and critically examine the shifting terrain of film- and media-making in the Middle East, and of practices of film and media studies regarding it, testing them both against their larger, social enabling conditions at the national, regional, and transnational levels. Titles in the series will engage recent developments in the field of Middle East film and media studies and will help point the field in an intellectually meaningful, pedagogically effective direction in relation to both current and, in some cases, significant, previously ignored older work. The series is conceived at a moment during which Middle Eastern film and film criticism have begun to develop in new directions. Recent years have witnessed a modest increase in scholarly engagement with topics and modes of inquiry often previously considered outside academic discourse. A handful of books and special journal issues published in English over the past half-decade, focusing on specific Middle Eastern countries, such as Tunisia, Morocco, Syria, Iran, Palestine/Israel and Turkey, as well as the long-overdue establishment of cinema studies as an emerging field of academic inquiry within universities located in the Arab world indicate a preponderance of previously unproblematized issues now circulating within the field. These include critical questions from queer and transgendered perspectives about the representation of women, and from indigenous and settler-colonial studies perspectives about the representation of migrant workers and refugees, the growing importance of documentary, digital animation and hybrid shooting, the continuing influence of global cinema imperatives, and the revival of interest in militant, revolutionary and third cinema aesthetics.

The Postcolonial Studies series explores the enormous variety and richness in postcolonial culture and transnational literatures. The series aims to publish work which explores various facets of the legacy of colonialism including: imperialism, nationalism, representation and resistance, neocolonialism, diaspora, displacement and migratory identities, cultural hybridity, transculturation, exile, and geographical and metaphorical borderlands. This series does not define its attentions to any single place, region, or disciplinary approach, and we are interested in books informed by a variety of theoretical perspectives. While seeking the highest standards of scholarship, the Postcolonial Studies series is thus a broad forum for the interrogation of textual, cultural and political postcolonialisms. La colección "Artes visuales y sociedades hispánicas" está dedicada a trabajos monográficos o colectivos en español sobre representaciones artísticas de las culturas de los países hispánicos, tanto en España y América como en algunos territorios o comunidades de otros continentes. El concepto de ʻartes visualesʼ incluye aquí toda forma de representación relacionada con la imagen, ya se refiera a artes académicas como la fotografía, la pintura, el teatro y el cine, o a estilos más recientes, populares y/o heterogéneos como la historieta, la novela gráfica, la televisión, los videojuegos, el street art, las instalaciones y otras modalidades de arte libre o efímero, ligados o no a las nuevas tecnologías. Esta colección pretende asociar a una serie de autores de horizontes diversos interesados por la función social del arte actual o tradicional, por la manera en que las representaciones visuales pretenden transmitir puntos de vista críticos, pragmáticos, comprometidos y/o políticos sobre los conflictos a través de los cuales evolucionaron en el pasado o se transforman actualmente las sociedades hispánicas. The "Visual Arts and Hispanic Societies" series is devoted to monographic or collective works in Spanish on artistic representations of the cultures of Hispanic countries, in Spain and in the Americas as well as territories or communities on other continents. The concept of ʻvisual artsʼ includes all forms of representation related to the image, whether they refer to academic arts such as photography, painting, theatre and film, or to more recent, popular and/or heterogeneous styles such as graphic novels, television, video games, street art, installations, interventions and other forms of free or ephemeral art, whether or not linked to new technologies. "Central Europe" for this book series is identified as the geographic region of Austria, the Balkans, the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Ukraine, Romania, and the regions of the former Galicia and Bukovina during the Habsburg period, and the former East Germany. "For many years, the field of Childhood Studies has crossed disciplinary boundaries that include, but are not limited to, anthropology, art, education, history, humanities, and sociology by addressing diverse histories, cultures, forms of representation, and conceptualizations of «childhood». The publications in the Rethinking Childhood Series have supported this work by challenging the universalization of childhood and introducing reconceptualized, critical spaces from which increased social justice and possibilities are generated for those who are younger. This newly named Childhood Studies Series in the global 21st century is created to continue this focus on social justice for those who are younger, but also to broaden and further explore conceptualizations of privilege, justice, possibility, responsibility and activism. Authors are encouraged to consider «childhood» from within a context that would decenter human privilege and acknowledge environmental justice and the more-than-human Other, while continuing to research, act upon, and transform beliefs, public policy, societal institutions, and possibilities for ways of living/being in the world for all of us. Boundary crossings are of greater importance than ever as we live unprecedented technological change, violence against living beings that are not labeled human (through experimentation, industrialization, and medicine), plundering of the earth, and gaps between the privileged and the marginalized (whether rich/poor, human/nonhuman). Along with continued concerns related to social justice, equity, poverty, and diversity, some authors in the Childhood Studies Series will choose to think about, and ask questions like: What does it mean to be a younger human being within such a world? What are the values, education, and forms of care provided within this context; and can/how should these dispositions and practices be transformed? Can childhood studies, and the diverse forms of representation and practice associated with it, conceptualize and practice a more just world broadly, while avoiding utopian determinisms and continuing to remain critical and multiple?
