Hip-Hop Education

Hip-Hop Education is a sociopolitical movement that utilizes both online and offline platforms to advance the utility of hip-hop as a theoretical framework and practical approach to teaching and learning. The movement is aimed at disrupting the oppressive structures of schools and schooling for marginalized youth through a reframing of hip-hop in the public sphere, and the advancement of the educative dimensions of the hip-hop culture. Hip-Hop Education’s academic roots include, but are not limited to the fields of education, sociology, anthropology and cultural studies and it draws its most distinct connections to the field of hip-hop studies; which is in many ways, is the stem from which this branch of study has grown and established itself. Authors and academics who brought hip-hop into fields like African American studies, philosophy, and the general public writ large, provided in depth studies of a wide range of topics that range from feminism to race and racism. Hip-Hop Education: Innovation, Inspiration, Elevation will be the first of its kind in educational praxis. The series will be composed of books by artists, scholars, teachers, and community participants. The series will publish global authors who are experts in the fields of Hip-Hop, Education, Black Studies, Black Popular Culture, Community Studies, Activism, Music, and Curriculum. Hip-Hop Education is explicit about its focus on the science and art of teaching and learning. This series argues that Hip-hop embodies the awareness, creativity and innovation that are at the core of any true education. Furthermore, its work brings visibility to the powerful yet silenced narratives of achievement and academic ability among the hip-hop generation; reflecting the brilliance, resilience, ingenuity and intellectual ability of those who are embedded in hip-hop culture but also not necessarily academics in the conventional sense.

Hip Hop Studies and Activism book series is the first ever book series dedicated to hip hop studies. This series is an intersectional, interdisciplinary liberatory project that promotes justice, equity, and inclusion. Hip Hop Studies and Activism book series will connect with a broad range of disciplines such as feminism, globalization, economics, science, history, environmental studies, media studies, political science, sociology, religion, anthropology, philosophy, education, and cultural studies. Against apolitical scholarship, Hip Hop studies argues for an engaged critical praxis that promotes the listening and defending space and place for marginalized and silenced communities especially Communities of Color and Youth of Color. Hip hop activism is committed to social action, advocacy, and activism, while other book series are more rooted in theory and apolitical analysis. We will therefore, make a strong effort to publish People and Youth of Color.

Histories of Religious Pluralism

This new book series will show that a critical understanding of religious pluralism in the past is of vital significance to debates about identity, diversity, and co-existence in the present. Studies will focus on using a historical perspective to address one of three key themes in the period between 1500 and 2000 CE: intra-religious pluralism; inter-religious pluralism; or, religion, secularism, and the nation state. Within this frame of reference, constructive contrasts between a wide range of foci, approaches, and viewpoints will be keenly encouraged. The series will champion established lines of research in political, social, cultural, and gendered histories of religious pluralism – e.g. studies on liberty, persecution, and toleration – whilst also encouraging novel ways of transcending a scholarly discourse which is dominated by ideologies and methodologies derived from the social sciences – e.g. by studies on the theological and literary dimensions of conflict, cohesion, and community. The series will embrace scholarship on subjects from any part of the world. European and extra-European perspectives that complement traditional Anglo-American thinking are particularly welcome. As the ‘global turn’ continues to energize new types of enquiry, the series will also seek to advance studies of indigenous and displaced religious groups. With this scope there is a reflexive acknowledgement that the rationale for and defining concepts of the series are grounded in a ‘western’ intellectual tradition; however, this should serve as a challenge to prospective authors to pioneer new dialogues between ‘western’ and ‘non-western’ approaches and foci, or even surpass the dichotomy altogether. An emphasis will be given to promoting the best research of early career scholars from around the world, whilst also giving more established academics the opportunity to develop their multimedia policy-orientated work – e.g. podcasts, blogs, talks, press briefings, reports for thinktanks, governments, and public agencies etc. – into a book that would engage peers and students alike. Kulturwissenschaft(en) als interdisziplinäres Projekt ist der Titel einer Tagungs- und Publikationsreihe, in der verschiedene Fächer mit kulturwissenschaftlichen Perspektiven in einen interdisziplinären Austausch treten durch die gemeinsame Betrachtung spezifischer Gegenstände, deren Untersuchung die disziplinären Grenzen überschreitet. Dabei stoßen unterschiedliche Verständnisse von «Kulturwissenschaft(en)»“ aufeinander. Diese umspannen ein breites Spektrum an Positionen zwischen der Vorstellung eines übergreifenden Metafaches Kulturwissenschaft, Diskurshoheit beanspruchenden kulturwissenschaftlichen Einzeldisziplinen und überfachlichen Diskussionen gleichberechtigter Fächer. Immer aber geht es dabei um produktiven inter- oder transdisziplinären Austausch und darum, nicht mehr einzelfachlich zu bearbeitende Problemstellungen kooperativ zu beleuchten.

The new series RAPHAEL AND HIS TIME is focussed on single works or oeuvres in the visual arts realized by Raphael and his workshop. Moreover, works of art by contemporaries can be discussed too. The papers are aiming at the monographic investigation of painting, drawing, and printing basing on the variety of the methodological analysis. Particular stress will be laid on technological analysis, which will be published too. Die Schriftenreihe RAFFAEL UND SEINE ZEIT dient der Veröffentlichung von Untersuchungen zu Einzel- und Gesamtwerken von Raffael und von Künstlern seiner unmittelbaren Nachfolge. Zudem sollen auch Werke anderer Künstler dieser Zeit herangezogen werden können. Die Beiträge betreffen sowohl Arbeiten der Malerei, der Zeichnung sowie der Druckgraphik. Diese neue Reihe ist einer Methodenvielfalt verpflichtet, wobei ein besonderer Akzent auf technologische Analysen gelegt wird. Auch die technischen Untersuchungen werden in angemessener Form veröffentlicht.

Reconfiguring Identities in the Portuguese-Speaking World

The series publishes studies across the entire spectrum of Lusophone literature, culture and intellectual history, from the Middle Ages to the present day, with particular emphasis on figurations and reconfigurations of identity, broadly understood. It is especially interested in work which interrogates national identity and cultural memory, or which offers fresh insights into Portuguese-speaking cultural and literary traditions, in diverse historical contexts and geographical locations. It is open to a wide variety of approaches and methodologies as well as to interdisciplinary fields: from literary criticism and comparative literature to cultural and gender studies, to film and media studies. It also seeks to encourage critical dialogue among scholarship originating from different continents. Proposals are welcome for either single-author monographs or edited collections (in English and/or Portuguese). The Radical Animal Studies and Total Liberation book series branches out of Critical Animal Studies (a field co-founded by Anthony J. Nocella II) with the argument that criticism is not enough. Action must follow theory. This series demands that scholars are engaged with their subjects both theoretically and actively via radical, revolutionary, intersectional action for total liberation. Founded in anarchism, the series provides space for scholar-activists who challenge authoritarianism and oppression in their many daily forms. Radical Animal Studies and Total Liberation promotes accessible and inclusive scholarship that is based on personal narrative as well as traditional research, and it is especially interested in the advancement of interwoven voices and perspectives from multiple radical, revolutionary social justice groups and movements such as Black Lives Matter, Idle No More, Earth First!, the Zapatistas, ADAPT, prison abolition, LGBTTQQIA rights, disability liberation, Earth Liberation Front, Animal Liberation Front, political prisoners, radical transnational feminism, environmental justice, food justice, youth justice, and Hip Hop activism.

Gender and Sexualities in Education

Part of the Peter Lang Diversity series, the Gender and Sexualities in Education series seeks to publish high quality manuscripts that address the complex interrelationship between gender and sexuality in shaping young people’s schooling experiences, their participation in popular youth cultures, and their sense of self in relation to others. Books published might include: a study of hip-hop youth culture, Latina/o students, white working class youth, or LGBTQQ community groups –– in each case asking how they explore, challenge, and perform gender and sexualities as part of learning and «“becoming somebody».” Other books might address issues of masculinities, gender and embodiment, trans and genderqueer youth, sexuality education, or the construction of heteronormativity in schools. We invite contributions from authors of ethnographic and other qualitative studies, theoretical texts, as well as critical analyses of popular culture “«texts”» targeted at or produced by youth – including an analysis of popular music and fan culture, video and film, and gaming culture. While the focus of the series is on original research or theoretical monographs, exceptionally well-crafted proposals for thematically coherent edited volumes and textbooks will also be considered. People of Print: New Histories in the Book and Print Trades is a platform for new scholarship focusing on the people behind the global print trade. The series reveals the untold stories of printers, publishers, booksellers and cultural intermediaries who have shaped the literary and cultural history of print networks worldwide. It expands the field through fresh perspectives on overlooked individuals, places and periods.　 People of Print offers a forum for both emergent and established international researchers to disseminate their scholarship. Proposals are welcome for monographs, biographies and edited collections that challenge established narratives and highlight the diversity of the book and print trades. The primary language of publication is English. All projects will undergo rigorous peer review.

Race and Resistance Across Borders in the Long Twentieth Century

This series focuses on the history and culture of activists, artists and intellectuals who have worked within and against racially oppressive hierarchies in the twentieth century and beyond, and who have then sought to define and to achieve full equality once those formal hierarchies have been overturned. It explores the ways in which such individuals - writers, scholars, campaigners and organizers, ministers, and artists and performers of all kinds - locate their resistance within a global context and forge connections with each other across national, linguistic, regional and imperial borders. Disseminating the latest interdisciplinary scholarship on the history, literature and culture of anti-racist movements in Africa, the Caribbean, the United States, Europe, Asia and Latin America, the series foregrounds, through a cross-disciplinary approach, the transnational and intercultural nature of these resistance movements. The series embraces a range of themes, including but not limited to antislavery, intellectual and literary networks, emigration and immigration, anti-imperialism, church-based and religious movements, civil rights, citizenship and identity, Black Power, resistance strategies, women's movements, cultural transfer, white supremacy and anti-immigration, hip hop and global justice movements. The series originated in the Race and Resistance Research Programme at The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities (TORCH), University of Oxford. Proposals are invited for sole- and joint-authored monographs as well as edited collections. We welcome projects in a wide range of fields, including but not restricted to history, political science, anthropology, literature, cultural studies and media studies. This series of monographs is concerned with drama and allied entertainment in a wide variety of kinds in the theatre and on film, television and video screens. The emphasis is on the history and interpretation of dramatic entertainment, performance and production in regular and musical theatre, including music hall and variety stages, in para-theatrical activities, like fairground performance and festivals, and in the silent and sound cinema and on television and video. The series engages particularly with the social, political and economic contexts of drama on past and present stages and screens, considering the work of dramatists, performers, directors, designers, technicians and administrators, and will aim to be very wide-ranging in scope, its subjects spanning Classical, Medieval and Renaissance European drama and theatre, Eastern theatre forms, and international modern drama in its various performance kinds. Within this broad remit, the series hopes to publish historical, critical and theoretical studies, annotated anthologies of critical, theoretical and dramatic texts, and collections of interviews and screenplays.

Towards a Universal Civilization

This series aims to promote an integration of sciences, humanities, and a discussion of the diversity of religions and cultures. We encourage an interdisciplinary approach, perceived as a means to seek common truths in reference to individual life and the life among local and national communities. We are interested in texts, monographs and collections of texts that debate the forms of experiencing the self in relation to itself, to other people, and towards nature and culture. We hope to open up an opportunity for a dialogue instrumental in the philosophical search of the intellectual points of agreement.

International Bonhoeffer Interpretations

This series on the theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906–1945) seeks to offer what its title promises by presenting interpretations of his thought from international perspectives. The term interpretation is meant to indicate both careful analysis of Bonhoeffer’'s texts and the creative exploration of his theological ideas in order to gauge their relevance for contemporary issues of interpretation, religion, politics, and culture. The editors hope that this series will promote greater awareness of Bonhoeffer’'s international significance and facilitate research from a variety of cultural and disciplinary perspectives. The series IBI will include the conference proceedings of the annual International Bonhoeffer Colloquia (IBC) which are organized by the editors of the series. These colloquia concentrate on different aspects of Bonhoeffer’'s theology and try to coordinate the international network of Bonhoeffer projects. Their focus is the exchange and cooperation among younger research fellows dealing with the theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. The new series will also include monographs and essay collections which reflect on the new perspectives Bonhoeffer’'s theology opens up for current challenges experienced by an increasingly international global community.

Higher Education and Civic Democratic Engagement

How might we interrogate and reimagine the impact of civic, democratic engagement across higher education? This series invites narratives and new studies that critically and creatively explore the possibilities and limitations of civic, democratic engagement within higher education. The editors seek to gather inclusive, imaginary, transdisciplinary scholarship exploring the impact of next generation civic, democratic engagement from a diverse range of voices. Among others, we hope these voices will include international and indigenous perspectives, members from a diverse array of communities, researchers from across disciplines, teacher-scholars, practitioners and activists, undergraduate and graduate students, politicians, businesses, and different forms of administration. The editors invite proposals that critically examine historical, cultural, and structural dimensions of impact while exploring innovative strategies for disrupting and recreating more inclusive, liberatory, and plural forms of civic democratic engagement. The editors welcome and encourage a wide-range of formats including, but not limited to, narrative studies, ethnographies, mixed method studies, case studies, socio-cultural and/or historical analyses, theoretical treatises from multiple theoretical lens as well as reports and toolkits that support efforts to examine the impact of civic democratic engagement.
