Life and Letters of Ferdinand von Mueller

Of German origin Ferdinand von Mueller migrated to Australia in 1847. Government Botanist of Victoria for 43 years until his death in 1896, he was Australia's greatest scientist of the 19th century – a major contributor to international science, an intrepid explorer of parts of Australia previously unknown to Europeans, and a dominant figure in the scientific and intellectual life of his adopted country. Throughout his working life, Mueller kept up an enormous correspondence. Large numbers of letters by or to him have been located, scattered throughout the world, and edited for publication. These constitute a major new research tool for both Australian historians and historians of science. They are also of fundamental importance to Australian taxonomic botany, for Mueller introduced vast numbers of Australian plants to western science. German Life and Civilization contributes to a critical understanding of Central European cultural history from medieval times to the present. Culture is here defined in the broadest sense, comprising expressions and representations in literature, music, performative and pictorial arts, and media, as well as political and sociohistorical developments in the texture of everyday life. Building on its strengths in GDR scholarship and political literature, the series also seeks to explore newer thematic trends such as human entanglements with the environment and natural world, and transnational and minority communities. Studies in Life Writing: Biography, Autobiography, Memoir welcomes full-length studies of life writing in all its forms: biography, autobiography, memoir, journals, diaries, blogs, and so forth. Dovetailing nicely with the critical theories of the later twentieth century, life writing questions the divide between fact and fiction, challenges the possibility of presenting a life objectively, and examines how the shaping forces of language and memory prohibits any simple attempts at truth and reference. Provocatively, interest in life writing has increased as both autobiographical and biographical narratives have become a major presence on the Internet, and the growth of literary nonfiction has prompted a resurgence of life narratives and memoirs. The series invites both single-authored book-length studies and multi-authored essay collections on the theory and/or pedagogy of life writing.

This book series can be seen as a bridge that brings different worlds and directions of psychology together. The essence of the work proposed in this book series concerns mainly the biopsychological foundations of life in educational and health related fields. The world of the psychology of the Islamic cultural area, for example, is largely unknown for the western readers up to now. Therefore, concepts and research methods from „western" psychology, which are taught and researched around the world, are transferred and applied to questions, to contexts of the Islamic cultural area and to the related Islamic Psychology. Through the contributions in this book series, the content-related concepts, the research approaches and the ways of thinking of the Islamic psychology in educational and health related psychological fields become visible and known for all the western psychologists and researchers. In this way it is possible to create a substantial exchange in which all directions of psychology can contribute to the further development of the discipline of psychology as a whole. Until the publication of volume 21 the title of the series was "Polish Contemporary Philosophy and Philosophical Humanities". The series aspires to present a wide and relevant overview of best Polish works in philosophy and philosophical parts of the major fields of the humanities: political and social sciences, history, religious studies or what is named in Poland "the history of ideas". The subsequent editions of books within this series are either re-editions of the works previously published in non-Polish versions, or new translations from Polish. Some books contain extended works, other ones provide collections of smaller papers. Some of the authors presented in the series are widely acknowledged and regarded to be the "classics" of Polish intellectual life in the second half of the 20th Century, others are recognized as outstanding professors today. The quality and fame of the works and authors presented in the series are the only criteria for inclusion. The series is open to all streams of Polish philosophy: from analytical philosophy, through phenomenology and hermeneutics, to existential or religious philosophies. Also the word "philosophy" should be understood very widely in this case.

Women, Gender and Sexuality in German Literature and Culture welcomes proposals for monographs and rigorously edited essay collections focusing on the work of women, queer, trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming creators as well as the representation of women, gender and/or sexuality in literature, media and culture. The series contributes to efforts to broaden the German-language canon by publishing pioneering studies of relatively unknown writers, artists and filmmakers and cutting-edge assessments of more established figures. Studies of the history of women, queer, trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming subjects in German-speaking cultures, such as their participation in German, Austrian, Swiss and exile intellectual life and struggle for equal rights, as well as historical considerations of gender and sexuality in German-speaking countries, are also encouraged. Towards a Universal Civilization

This series aims to promote an integration of sciences, humanities, and a discussion of the diversity of religions and cultures. We encourage an interdisciplinary approach, perceived as a means to seek common truths in reference to individual life and the life among local and national communities. Who do you know who changed the way that we think about the world? Dissident Biographies is a landmark new series open to short biographical accounts of contrarian individuals who lived according to the edicts of their heart to make an impact in history. The series calls on authors to critically explore interactions between ideas and experience through the medium of biography. Its aim is to show the determinist impact of intellectual ideas on lives, movements and the sweep of history. Some of these biographies will polarise; others will reconcile or legitimate in retrospect. The editors seek to enable perspectives of equity, diversity and inclusion. We celebrate life accounts driven by the experience of marginalized communities emphasising the underrepresented within public discourse. The series is open to scholars and public intellectuals working in all areas of the humanities and social sciences, avowing an interdisciplinary or even post-disciplinary approach. Within a limit of 40, 000 words you are expected to identify key moments in the awakening of a new ideal. How and why did it arise in the subject’s life? What was disruptive about its realisation? What attempts were made to silence it? How has this been noticed in history or activism? You will tease out how the subject’s ideas impacted their time as a catalyst or provocation for contemporaries and, via memory, for future generations. Authors are charged to produce an exciting, provocative and even polemical account of a life that is misunderstood, underrated or influential. Feuchtwanger Studies

This series focuses on the life and work of the internationally celebrated German writer Lion Feuchtwanger (1884–1958), whose works have been translated into many languages. Of particular interest are topics such as Feuchtwanger’s role as a critic of Weimar Germany and the rise of Nazism, his years of exile in France (1933–40) and in the United States (1940–58), his achievements as a proponent of the historical novel, and his reception both in Germany and in the wider world. The series presents Feuchtwanger in the context of his times, paying special attention to his years in Southern California and his relationships with other leading cultural figures of the era. With Feuchtwanger at its core, the series explores the multinational literary and intellectual network that resulted from German and Austrian exile under Nationalism Socialism: from Paris to Vienna, Los Angeles to London, Buenos Aires to Tel Aviv, and New York to Moscow. This book series will provide space and place for marginalized communities, students, workers, public intellectuals, activist-scholars, teachers, professors, justice impacted people, youth, and oppressed voices to critically resist and amplify their counter-stories which demand that, in the rollout of the neoliberal agendas, public education must be affordable, inclusive, equitable, inclusive, just, transformative, and open to all. This book series foregrounds writer’s agency with authentic story-telling, autoethnography, collective biography, and life writing narratives and is a place for disseminating participatory action and social justice activist research. It seeks critical teaching and critical writing that resists Eurocentric pedagogies and methodologies such as denotative reports, standardized metrics, rubrics, corporate, neoliberal, capitalist, standardized, colonial, factory education that colonizes the mind. Instead, the series privileges radical liberatory praxis and makes space for outstanding embodied action research tied to teaching, transformative participatory projects created with not ‘on’ marginalized communities that centers the margin. This book series defends, supports, and participates in revolutionary, transformative, social justice radical critical abolition movements to end authoritarianism, domination, oppression, state-violence, and repression. This book series has a hope for democracy from which knowledge from and for the margins emerge as powerful counter-currents and disruptive discourses that liberate. Cultural History and Literary Imagination

This series promotes critical inquiry into the relationship between the literary imagination and its cultural, intellectual or political contexts. The series encourages the investigation of the role of the literary imagination in cultural history and the interpretation of cultural history through literature, visual culture and the performing arts. Contributions of a comparative or interdisciplinary nature are particularly welcome. Individual volumes might, for example, be concerned with any of the following: The mediation of cultural and historical memory, The material conditions of particular cultural manifestations, The construction of cultural and political meaning, Intellectual culture and the impact of scientific thought, The methodology of cultural inquiry, Intermediality, Intercultural relations and practices. Acceptance is subject to advice from our editorial board, and all proposals and manuscripts undergo a rigorous peer review assessment prior to publication. History and Philosophy of Science

This series invites book proposals that include innovative strategies for pursuing history and philosophy of science. Especially welcome are scholarly works using non-analytic philosophical perspectives to successfully bring to bear on our understanding of how scientific practices are related to the humanities and the social sciences. The series also welcomes exploration of the sciences in relation to gender, culture, society, and the intellectual and social contexts that illuminate the places, the structures of origination, and the patterns of development over generations. Approaches may include focused analyses of thinkers from unorthodox perspectives that can shed new light on the history and philosophy of science, such as Montaigne, Bruno, Galileo, Newton, Pascal, Emerson, Thoreau, Nietzsche, Jung, Freud. Proposals aimed at probing the philosophical intersections between the sciences and other societal practices that can be configured as heretic are also encouraged. These might include the emergence of the psychoanalytic movements in the twentieth century, how the fine arts have impinged on the historical processes that gave rise to the sciences over the last few centuries, how in turn the intellectual frameworks inaugurated by the sciences have been imported into the avant-garde movements that paralleled the advent of industrialized societies, and finally how contemporary scientific domains of knowledge reverberate in ’deviant’ social and artistic practices.
