Cultural Critique is a research monograph series drawing from those scholarly traditions in the social sciences and the humanities that are premised on critical, performance-based cultural studies agenda. Preference is given to experimental, risk-taking manuscripts that are at the intersection of interpretative theory, critical methodology, culture, media, history, biography, and social structure.

Marginalisée pendant plusieurs décennies comme une idéologie de combat ou une entreprise fataliste, la critique sociale est revenue en force tant à la faveur des relectures contemporaines du post-structuralisme qu’à travers les perspectives nouvelles ouvertes par les diverses figures du post-marxisme et du néo-pragmatisme. Un point commun de cette «　nouvelle critique sociale » est d’accueillir des recherches provenant de différents champs disciplinaires privilégiant les questions de théorie de l’action et de transformation des formes de participation collective. La présente collection propose de contribuer à ce mouvement en ciblant plus spécifiquement son impact sur la pensée juridique dans ses liens aux changements sociaux et ceci à travers deux séries spécialisées, l’une consacrées aux «　études idéalistes　», l’autre aux « études décoloniales　». De fait, ces deux traditions, l’une historique, l’autre actuelle, se rejoignent dans le projet d’identifier les conditions à remplir pour parvenir, collectivement, à une critique rigoureuse du pouvoir attribué à des systèmes juridiques constamment menacés par la réification de leurs pratiques et dès lors impuissants à accompagner les grands changements de société. La collection s’inscrit dans la tradition de recherche initiée par Jacques Lenoble, André Berten et Marc Maesschalck à l’Université de Louvain en théorie de la norme et en philosophie de l’action.

La collection a pour but la publication et la promotion de travaux originaux et inédits concernant les différentes conceptualisations philosophiques de la pensée physique et mathématique contemporaine. Plus qu'à décrire les faits empiriques par des méthodes et des outils purement quantitatifs, ces travaux doivent viser à proposer des modèles explicatifs qui permettent d'élucider un ou plusieurs aspects conceptuels de la création mathématique et de l'invention physique. Ainsi, on privilégiera les travaux qui accordent une place fondamentale au rôle des idéalisations géométriques dans l'intelligibilité du réel et même de phénomènes très concrets. La collection entend accueillir tout particulièrement les recherches qui explorent philosophiquement et approfondissent expérimentalement des idées essentielles à l'interface entre certaines théories mathématiques, notamment géométriques et topologiques, et les sciences de la nature comme la physique et la biologie, ou toute autre discipline théorique qui s'y rattache. Sa raison d'être réside dans l'exigence de repenser, selon une démarche philosophique à la fois critique et rigoureuse, les grandes découvertes scientifiques du XXe siècle qui ont changé en profondeur notre perception de la réalité, et de développer une réflexion autour des perspectives épistémologiques nouvelles qui s'en sont récemment dégagées. Un certain nombre d'études et de recherches récentes montrent l'intérêt de réactualiser des idées issues de ce qu'on appelait à une époque la tradition «scientifique» de la philosophie naturelle. Ceci a permis de renouer avec certaines théories élaborées par les Naturphilosophen, de réhabiliter les idées des fondateurs de la psychophysique, de reprendre les intuitions et les analyses des phénoménologues et théoriciens de la Gestalt, de développer la pensée des pionniers de la morphologie et de la biologie théorique. Un des buts de la collection est de permettre que ces idées soient développées, débattues et mieux connues d'un plus grand nombre de chercheurs et de lecteurs. Cette collection aspire à devenir un laboratoire d'idées: elle entend d'abord susciter l'élaboration d'une véritable «philosophie géométrique» des formes naturelles et des êtres organiques, ainsi que contribuer à renouveler les grands débats scientifiques et métaphysiques sur les concepts d'espace et de temps et sur leur rôle dans la compréhension des rapports entre les structures mathématiques et les phénomènes physiques. On souhaite aussi s'interroger sur les limites de la science actuelle et sur les conséquences que comportent ses récentes retombées technicistes. New Disciplinary Perspectives on Education

Educational theory has always been framed within a wider context including philosophy, psychology, sociology and history. In the last ten years, educational discourse has been characterized by the emergence of a more managerialist paradigm and increased emphasis on the delivery of particular educational ‘outcomes’. This has taken place in the context of the huge expansion of tertiary education from the national level, a process in which education has come to be understood as a lucrative global commodity. But alongside these developments, there has also been a resurgence of interest in the educational insights provided by the disciplines of education: for example, renewed emphasis on enquiry-based approaches to learning (Dewey), social constructivist pedagogy (Vygotsky), educational critique (Bourdieu, Freire), new inter-religious pedagogies (Grimmit, Jackson) and fresh perspectives on the ‘spiral’ curriculum (Bruner). Much of this work takes the form of a critique of the instrumentalism of outcome-driven approaches. As the debt-laden student emerges as a political subject, educational discourse has come to represent a particularly contested terrain. The book series New Disciplinary Perspectives on Education seeks to explore how these debates within the resurgence of the disciplines of education relate to wider political and economic conditions, creating new critical understandings and possibilities within educational theory and practice. It welcomes both theoretical and empirical studies, alongside mixed-methods approaches, and publishes disciplinary studies within philosophy, psychology, sociology and history as well as encouraging cross-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary work.

Critical Multicultural Perspectives on Whiteness

This book series seeks to engage a broad and cross-disciplinary range of students, scholars, activists, and others in a critical multicultural dialogue on the complex intersections of power, privilege, identity, and Whiteness. The series aims to link theory and practice to problematize key societal and educational concerns related to Whiteness. The series editors share the view that taking action for transformative change in and through education, in the spirit of what Paulo Freire called conscientization, is the role of educators who seek to address the needs of all their students. In focusing on Whiteness, we are concerned with social, economic, and environmental justice, the problematization of race, and the potential for education to be emancipatory in addressing power imbalances. Some of the questions of interest for this book series include: • How do we engage in critical discussions related to power, privilege, identity, and Whiteness when many multicultural frameworks dissuade us from such work? • How can we connect Whiteness to other intersecting and pivotal forms of being, marginalization, and identity? • How can those categorized as White engage in dialogues and action about Whiteness that can positively contribute to addressing concerns of racialized and marginalized groups? • How can we effectively contextualize and critique hegemony and globalized economic realities so as to be able to discuss race in a constructive and transformative manner?

Writing and Culture in the Long Nineteenth Century

The long nineteenth century, extending from the Napoleonic Wars to the First World War, was a time of enormous change and experimentation. This series aims to publish the work of scholars and critics alert to these changes in a variety of spheres, including literature, art, the sciences, philosophy, and economics. The editors have a special interest in work that addresses questions of aesthetics, poetics, and form at the intersection between the written word, the visual and decorative arts, architecture, and music. Many scholars are now working on the cultural matrix out of which these forms emerge and recent critical thinking has shown how important was the prevailing economic, political, scientific, and philosophical climate in creating the appropriate conditions for artistic production. Some volumes in the series focus on specific writers and texts, while others consider the connection between writing, art, philosophy, and science and the broader cultural horizon. All contribute significantly to the widening sphere of nineteenth-century literary studies.

The Middle East is understood in the broadest sense associated with the term, and is reflective of widely shared socio-religious patterns, histories, and heritages. Vampire Studies: New Perspectives on the Undead

Vampires are everywhere. Appearing on streaming services, in book series and on multimedia platforms, vampires and the undead are an integral part of popular culture in the twenty-first century. But vampires have a long and varied history across cultures from at least the early eighteenth century onwards. Nina Auerbach once commented on their cultural ubiquity: ‘Every age embraces the vampire it needs, and gets the vampire it deserves’. The inherently transformative properties of vampires have made them uniquely able to reflect the age in which they appear. As a result, they provide original and multiple perspectives, not just on culture, but on established and emerging areas of study. Vampires and the undead serve as a useful lens for exploring Indigeneity, environmental studies and the ecogothic; identity, ethnicity and gender politics; material culture, spectatorship and fan cultures; hybridity, post-humanism and futurities; disability, mental health and ageing studies; and theology, philosophy and politics. These new territories and methodologies of vampire studies also retroactively shift the ways we view and understand earlier iterations of the undead and the different cultures they materialized from. In this first book series dedicated to vampire studies, authors will explore the ongoing evolution of vampires and the undead in the broadest sense – including the supernatural, super-human and non-human, and across cultures, histories and media – and will use new theoretical frameworks to offer original and innovative readings of established and more recent texts. This original series aims to provide a focused hub for the diverse and often dispersed body of study that sees the vampire and the undead not as a subgenre of other categories such as the Gothic or horror, but as a genre in its own right that intersects with others. An important dimension of the series is diversity and the inclusion of multiple cultural and minority perspectives, including LGBTQ+, disability, Indigeneity, and any approaches that encourage new ways of viewing the cultural impact of vampires and the undead and widen our understanding of an ever-expanding genre. The Yearbook on History and Interpretation of Phenomenology

“The Yearbook on History and Interpretation of Phenomenology” is a peer-reviewed annual. It includes contributions about the history of phenomenology because phenomenology has its own specific development anchored in the texts of Edmund Husserl, his predecessors and followers, its distinctive themes and problems set within the frame of the philosophical and scientific discussions of their period. The yearbook is open to inquiries about the interpretation of phenomenology and to different approaches towards understanding phenomenological research, its systematic and methodological insights and its possible contributions to contemporary discussions both about pure philosophy and within the context of more interdisciplinary research. It is also open to broader discussions with other philosophical schools of thought. Volume 5 terminates the series.

Les dernières décennies du XXe siècle ont été caractérisées par l’émergence et la reconnaissance en tant que telles des littératures francophones. Ce processus ouvre le devenir du français à une pluralité dont il s’agit de se donner, désormais, les moyens d’approche et de compréhension. Cela implique la prise en compte des historicités de ces différentes cultures et littératures. Dans cette optique, la collection « Documents pour l’Histoire des Francophonies » entend mettre à la disposition du chercheur et du public, de façon critique ou avec un appareil critique, des textes oubliés, parfois inédits. Elle publie également des travaux qui touchent à la complexité comme aux enracinements historiques des francophonies et qui cherchent à tracer des pistes de réflexion transversales susceptibles de tirer de leur ghetto respectif les études francophones, voire d’avancer dans la problématique des rapports entre langue et littérature. Elle comporte une série consacrée à l’Europe, une à l’Afrique, une aux Amériques, et une aux problèmes théoriques des francophonies. Leeds Studies on Dante

The book series Leeds Studies on Dante is a collaboration between Peter Lang Oxford and the Leeds Centre for Dante Studies. Based at the University of Leeds, the Centre promotes the study of Dante from a variety of disciplinary and methodological perspectives, through support for individual and collaborative research and through work with students at all levels and with a broader public. In support of this remit, the series will publish innovative new research of the highest quality on any aspect of Dante studies. It is open to a wide range of different methodologies, including comparative and interdisciplinary approaches, studies of Dante's reception from the Middle Ages to the present, and research which engages with the poet's broader cultural context, as well as analysis of Dante's works. Proposals are welcomed for monographs or collections of essays in either English or Italian. Editions, commentaries and translations of exceptional scholarly value will also be considered. Potential contributors should send a detailed outline of their proposed volume, including a statement of the aims and remit of the volume and the critical methodology adopted, a chapter breakdown, and a sample chapter. In the case of edited volumes, editors are asked to send a paragraph outlining the cohesiveness of the volume and the rationale for the collection of essays. Recherches comparatives sur les livres et le multimédia d'enfance

Cette collection, destinée à créer un espace d’analyse sur les littératures et les productions culturelles dédiées à l’enfance et à la jeunesse, et ce quel qu’en soit le support – littérature orale, livre, multimédia, audiovisuel – se veut être un terrain d’échanges et un chantier ouvert à des questionnements éclairés. Dans cette perspective, elle s’attache à insérer la réflexion dans le vaste champ des approches critiques liées à la littérature en général et aux sciences humaines, tout en ayant le souci de présenter des études comparatives émanant d’horizons multiples et de pays divers. À ce titre, la collection, principalement orientée vers le monde francophone, pourra donner lieu à la publication d’ouvrages critiques en d’autres langues.

Medieval Interventions

Medieval Interventions publishes innovative studies on medieval culture broadly conceived. By «innovative», we envisage works espousing, for example, new research protocols especially those involving digitized resources, revisionist approaches to codicology and paleography, reflections on medieval ideologies, fresh pedagogical practices, digital humanities, advances in gender studies, as well as fresh thinking on animal, environmental, geospatial, and nature studies. In short, the series will seek to set rather than follow agendas in the study of medieval culture. Since medieval intellectual and artistic practices were naturally interdisciplinary, the series welcomes studies from across the humanities and social sciences. Recognizing also the vigor that marks the field worldwide, the series endeavors to publish work in translation from non-Anglophone medievalists.

Reflections on Signs and Language

This book series proposes themes that are generally associated with the so-called language and sign sciences, in the first place semiotics, linguistics and philosophy of language, inclusive of literary language. It also focuses on problems that interest the communication sciences, including mass-medial communication and the question of translation. However, the perspective is not limited to any one of these disciplinary spheres. Moreover, the series intends to propose a vision that is critical, open and dialogic, which means to say developed in terms of interdisciplinary dialogue. Such an approach is proficuous if it is not limited to encounter among specific disciplines, competencies and interests at a scientific level alone. In fact, a priority characterising this series is to create the conditions for encounter between the sciences of signs, language and communication, on the one hand, and the problems of everyday life which are closely involved, indeed are engendered in them, on the other. We live in a world where life overall as much as the life of each one of us depends increasingly on signs, language and communication. But there's more: not only human life, but life in general, as biosemiotics now evidences unequivocally, consists of communication and is made of signs. We are looking forward to receiving contributions from all over the world, mindful of the series' interdisciplinary orientation, characteristics and interests. Submissions should be written in English and will be peer-reviewed by the relevant specialists This book series proposes themes that are generally associated with the so-called language and sign sciences, in the first place semiotics, linguistics and philosophy of language, inclusive of literary language. It also focuses on problems that interest the communication sciences, including mass-medial communication and the question of translation. However, the perspective is not limited to any one of these disciplinary spheres. Moreover, the series intends to propose a vision that is critical, open and dialogic, which means to say developed in terms of interdisciplinary dialogue. Such an approach is proficuous if it is not limited to encounter among specific disciplines, competencies and interests at a scientific level alone. In fact, a priority characterising this series is to create the conditions for encounter between the sciences of signs, language and communication, on the one hand, and the problems of everyday life which are closely involved, indeed are engendered in them, on the other. We live in a world where life overall as much as the life of each one of us depends increasingly on signs, language and communication. But there's more: not only human life, but life in general, as biosemiotics now evidences unequivocally, consists of communication and is made of signs. We are looking forward to receiving contributions from all over the world, mindful of the series' interdisciplinary orientation, characteristics and interests. Die Reihe Studies on Language and Culture in Central and Eastern Europe bietet ein Forum für mittel-, ost- und südosteuropabezogene Forschung zu Gegenwartsthemen ebenso wie in historischer Perspektive und bezieht hierbei einen slawistischen Schwerpunkt. Die Monographien, Sammel- und Tagungsbände der Reihe adressieren die Schnittstelle von Sprach- und Kulturwissenschaft. Hieraus ergeben sich zahlreiche Profilthemen wie z. B. Sprachkontakt, Gender Studies, Minderheiten- und Grenzforschung.

Documents pour l’Histoire des Francophonies

Les dernières décennies du XXe siècle ont été caractérisées par l’émergence et la reconnaissance en tant que telles des littératures francophones. Ce processus ouvre le devenir du français à une pluralité dont il s’agit de se donner, désormais, les moyens d’approche et de compréhension. Cela implique la prise en compte des historicités de ces différentes cultures et littératures. Dans cette optique, la collection « Documents pour l’Histoire des Francophonies » entend mettre à la disposition du chercheur et du public, de façon critique ou avec un appareil critique, des textes oubliés, parfois inédits. Elle publie également des travaux qui touchent à la complexité comme aux enracinements historiques des francophonies et qui cherchent à tracer des pistes de réflexion transversales susceptibles de tirer de leur ghetto respectif les études francophones, voire d’avancer dans la problématique des rapports entre langue et littérature. Elle comporte une série consacrée à l’Europe, une à l’Afrique, une aux Amériques, et une aux problèmes théoriques des francophonies.
