These "Studies" explore the periodical in its many forms, dating back to the beginning of printing. In addition to magazines and newspapers, we investigate broadsheets, folk calendars, almanacs, and other forms of the periodical. In this international and interdisciplinary series, local, regional, national and trans-European communication spaces and forms are also examined. The series considers historical developments (of a specific genre or an ensemble of several periodicals, etc.) and offers synchronous investigations into the media and communications of a given period. The "Studies" aim to contribute to the understanding of the emergence, establishment and diversification of the European print media reception and literary and media formats and techniques. Die „Studien" erforschen die vielfältigen Formen der periodisch publizierten Kommunikation seit Beginn des Buchdrucks. Neben Zeitschriften, Magazinen oder Zeitungen gehören hierzu auch ältere Formen wie Flugblätter, Volkskalender, Almanache etc. In der internationalen und interdisziplinären Reihe werden lokale, regionale, nationale oder transeuropäische Kommunikationsräume und -formen untersucht. Sie interessiert sich für historische Entwicklungen (einer spezifischen Gattung oder eines Ensembles mehrerer Periodika etc.) und bietet synchrone Untersuchungen zur medialen Kommunikation einer Epoche. Damit leisten die Studien einen Beitrag zur Erforschung der Entstehung, Etablierung und Diversifizierung der europäischen Printmedienrezeption sowie medialer und literarischer Formate und Techniken.

Die dabei angewandten Methoden reichen von klassisch literaturwissenschaftlichen und komparatistischen bis zu kulturwissenschaftlichen Ansätzen. Border Studies

The Series «　Borders and European Integration　» fills in a gap in Social Sciences, as it connects two so far independent research strands: European Studies and Border Studies. Mainly initiated by geographers and originally hosted in the United States, Border Studies primarily deal with the study of borders and borderlands, whereas European Studies analyse the process of European Integration, its actors, institutions and policy fields. Although the idea of a Europe without borders was part of the project of the European Economic Community, the multidimensional role of the border has not been sufficiently taken into account by researchers in European Studies. Inversely, Border Studies have only rarely examined the specificity of borders and borderlands in Europe in comparison to other regions in the world. At the crossroads between Area Studies and International Relations, this Series therefore offers a pluri-disciplinary approach to borders and their role in the European construction. Taking into account the perspective of different disciplines in Social Sciences, the diversity of actors of European Integration and borderlands (local, regional, national,) it allows a new multi-level and decentred view on conflicts and cooperation at European borders. The Series addresses researchers and university scholars of all disciplines in Social Sciences and wishes to tackle the challenging contemporary questions on borders in Europe. La collection «　Frontières et intégration européenne　» répond au besoin de lier deux champs disciplinaires jusque-là peu connectés　: celui des études européennes et celui des Border Studies. Fortement impulsés par les géographes et implantés au départ aux Etats-Unis, les Border Studies s’intéressent surtout à l’étude de la frontière et aux espaces de voisinage alors que les études européennes se penchent sur l’analyse du processus d’intégration européenne, ses acteurs, ses institutions et ses politiques. Alors que l’idée de l’Europe sans frontières fait partie du projet de la Communauté économique européenne, le rôle multidimensionnel de la frontière n’a pas été suffisamment pris en compte par les chercheurs en Etudes européennes. De leur côté, les Border Studies n’ont que peu abordé la spécificité des frontières de l’Europe et de ses espaces de voisinage par rapport à d’autres régions dans le monde. Au croisement des Area Studies et des Relations Internationales, la collection propose donc une approche pluridisciplinaire des frontières et de leur rôle dans la construction européenne. En tenant compte du regard différentes disciplines en Sciences humaines, de la diversité des acteurs de la construction européenne et des territoires frontaliers (locaux, régionaux, nationaux ) en Europe, elle permet ainsi d’avoir une nouvelle approche multi-niveaux et décentralisée des conflits et coopérations aux frontières européennes. La collection s’adresse aux universitaires et chercheurs de toute discipline en Sciences humaines souhaitant interroger les grandes thématiques des frontières en Europe. Die Reihe «　Grenzen und Europäische Integration　» schließt eine Lücke in den Geisteswissenschaften, indem sie zwei bisher unabhängige Forschungsstränge miteinander verknüpft: die Europawissenschaften und die Border Studies. Die im Wesentlichen von den Geographen angestossenen und ursprünglich in den USA angesiedelten Border Studies interessieren sich vor allem für die Erforschung von Grenzen und Grenzgebieten, bzw. Nachbarschaftsräumen, während die Europawissenschaften sich der Analyse des Europäischen Integrationsprozesses, dessen Akteure, Institutionen und Politikfelder widmen. Obwohl die Idee eines Europa ohne Grenzen auch Teil des Projektes der Europäischen Wirtschaftsgemeinschaft war, wurde die multidimensionale Rolle der Grenze nicht immer ausreichend von den Europawissenschaftlern berücksichtigt. Anderseits haben die Border Studies nur wenig die Spezifizität der Grenzen und Grenzräume Europas im Vergleich zu anderen Regionen in der Welt erforscht. Am Wegkreuz zwischen den Area Studies und den Internationalen Beziehungen bietet die Reihe daher einen pluri-disziplinaren Ansatz zu Grenzen und ihrer Rolle in der Europäischen Konstruktion. Durch die Berücksichtigung der Perspektive verschiedener Disziplinen aus den Geisteswissenschaften, der Diversität der Akteure der Europäischen Integration und der Grenzräume (lokale, regionale, nationale) ermöglicht sie eine neue multi-level und dezentralisierte Betrachtungsweise der Konflikte und Kooperationen an europäischen Grenzen. Studies on Themes and Motifs in Literature

The series is designed to advance the publication of research pertaining to themes and motifs in literature. The studies cover cross-cultural patterns as well as the entire range of national literatures. They trace the development and use of themes and motifs over extended periods, elucidate the significance of specific themes or motifs for the formation of period styles, and analyze the unique structural function of themes and motifs. By examining themes or motifs in the work of an author or period, the studies point to the impulses authors received from literary tradition, the choices made, and the creative transformation of the cultural heritage. These early modern figures often anticipated some of our clilemmas; How to manipulate an apparently quite mutable world and, at the same time, preserve belief in an immutable "centered" self? How to reconcile rationalist universalism with personal and cultural stability? Rene Descartes's postulate of man as the master and proprietor of an increasingly built world is fundamentally incompatible with his effort to underwrite man as a stable philosophical subject. Man's technical and linguistic mastery devours his "transcendent subjectivity." Students of literature are now using the ideas of what Larry Riggs calls "post-enlightenment thinkers"-Max Horkheimer, Jacques Lacan, Michael Foucault, Rene Girard, and others-to elucidate the implicit and explicit debates about rationalism that are embedded in literary works. This trend is most usefully seen as a renewal of contact with preoccupations that were quite current in medieval, Renaissance, and seventeenth-century European literature. Studies in the History and Culture of Scotland

This series presents a new reading of Scottish culture, establishing how Scots, and non-Scots, experience this newly devolved nation. Within the context of a rapidly changing United Kingdom and Europe, Scotland is engaged in an ongoing process of self-definition. The series will deal with this process as well as with cultural phenomena, from debates about the relative value of Gaelic-based, Scots and Anglicised culture, to period-specific definitions of Scottish identity. Orally transmitted culture - from traditional narratives to songs, customs, beliefs and material culture - will be a key consideration, along with the reconstruction of historical periods in cultural texts (visual and musical as well as historical). Taken as a whole, the series will go some way towards achieving a new understanding of a country with potential for development into parallel treatments of locally based cultural phenomena. The series welcomes monographs as well as collected papers.

Romanticism and after in France / Le Romantisme et après en France

Romanticism and after in France is a series designed to publish research monographs or longer works of high quality whether by established scholars or recent graduates, dealing with French literature in the period from pre-Romanticism to the turn of the twentieth century. Books may be in English or French, and may consist of studies of single authors or of wider topics. All submissions will be assessed by experts before acceptance. Le Romantisme et après en France est une collection dont le but est de publier des monographies ou des ouvrages de plus longue haleine, que ce soit des enseignants chevronnés ou de jeunes chercheurs. Ces livres traiteront de la littérature française depuis la période préromantique jusqu'aux premières années du vingtième siècle, et pourront être en anglais ou en français; ils pourront traiter d'un seul auteur ou d'un sujet plus étendu. Toute proposition sera évaluée par un comité d'experts.

Souvent présenté sous le seul angle de l’’européanisation de l’’Amérique, ce lien historique – imaginaire tout autant que matériel – s’’avère, en réalité, infiniment plus complexe et comprend également de nombreux « effets retours » de l’’Amérique vers l’’Europe. Cette collection vise donc à explorer, dans une perspective pluridisciplinaire et sans négliger les possibles détours que purent connaître les échanges euro-américains, les multiples phénomènes de circulation unissant ces deux rives de l’’Atlantique du début de la période coloniale jusqu’’au XXIe siècle. Économie et histoire

De 2007 à 2011, le Comité pour l’Histoire Économique et Financière de la France du ministère de l’Économie, des Finances et de l’Emploi et du ministère du Budget, des Comptes publics et de la Fonction publique, a entretenu la collection « Économie et Histoire », dont la direction est à présent vacante. La collection contribue à la diffusion des savoirs en histoire économique et en économie. Les ouvrages concernent toutes les périodes depuis le Moyen Âge jusqu’à nos jours. Cette collection a pour vocation d’accueillir les travaux d’auteurs français mais aussi étrangers, de chercheurs reconnus ou de jeunes universitaires ainsi que d’acteurs de la vie économique et financière, sous forme de monographies ou d’actes de colloques. De 2007 à 2011, le Comité pour l’Histoire Économique et Financière de la France du ministère de l’Économie, des Finances et de l’Emploi et du ministère du Budget, des Comptes publics et de la Fonction publique, a entretenu la collection « Économie et Histoire », dont la direction est à présent vacante. La collection contribue à la diffusion des savoirs en histoire économique et en économie. Les ouvrages concernent toutes les périodes depuis le Moyen Âge jusqu’à nos jours. Cette collection a pour vocation d’accueillir les travaux d’auteurs français mais aussi étrangers, de chercheurs reconnus ou de jeunes universitaires ainsi que d’acteurs de la vie économique et financière, sous forme de monographies ou d’actes de colloques.

This series aims to publish work of the highest quality in these areas. The series will include monographs and collaborative or collected works from both established and younger scholars, and will encompass a wide range of disciplines and theoretical approaches. Georges Pompidou – Archives

The «Georges Pompidou Archives» Series publishes thematic volumes aiming at retracing George Pompidou’’s most telling actions. The documents presented are mostly extracted from the archives of the French Presidency of the Republic. They consist of accounts of interviews, collaborators’’ notes, letters, newspaper articles… These publications first run from 1962 to 1968, years during which Pompidou was Général de Gaulle’’s Prime Minister, and then focus on the 1969–1974 period, when George Pompidou himself became President. Each volume of this series, which offers original analysis of each document used, is achieved by a scholar and research associate of the Georges Pompidou Association. La série « Archives » de la collection « Georges Pompidou » est consacrée à la publication de volumes thématiques représentatifs de l’’action de Georges Pompidou. Les documents sont essentiellement issus des archives de la présidence de la République. This series aims to publish studies in the arts, humanities and social sciences, the main focus of which is the Hispanic World. The series invites proposals with interdisciplinary approaches to Hispanic culture in fields such as the history of concepts and ideas, the sociology of culture, the evolution of the visual arts, the critique of literature and the uses of historiography. It is not confined to a particular historical period. Monographs as well as collected papers are welcome. Languages of publication are English and Spanish.

Travel Writing Across the Disciplines

The recent critical attention devoted to travel writing enacts a logical transition from the ongoing focus on autobiography, subjectivity, and multiculturalism. Travel extends the inward direction of autobiography to consider the journey outward and intersects provocatively with studies of multiculturalism, gender, and subjectivity. Whatever the journey's motive--tourism, study, flight, emigration, or domination--journey changes both the country visited and the self that travels. Travel Writing Across the Disciplines welcomes studies from all periods of literature on the theory and/or pedagogy of travel writing from various disciplines, such as social history, cultural theory, multicultural studies, anthropology, sociology, religious studies, literary analysis, and feminist criticism. The series, directed by Claudio Gigante and Dirk Vanden Berghe, contains texts and essays on Italian literature of the nineteenth century, understood here in its widest chronological extension, from the first Napoleonic campaign until the end of the first World War; which represents as well the period in which the Risorgimento was fulfilled. The extent of the social and cultural changes that took place in the course of the nineteenth century was such as to influence the whole «Short Century» that would have immediately followed. For this reason, the Italian literary production of such a crucial phase in modern history deserves to be the subject of a specific series of studies, open to different methodological approaches but with a focus on research carried out directly on the texts. Contributions are welcome in Italian and in major European languages. All the volumes in the series «Il secolo lungo» are subject to a double blind peer review. La collana, diretta da Claudio Gigante e Dirk Vanden Berghe, ospita testi e saggi dedicati alla letteratura italiana del secolo XIX, inteso qui nella sua massima estensione cronologica, dalla prima campagna napoleonica alla fine della Grande Guerra: che rappresenta anche il periodo in cui si compì la parabola del Risorgimento. L'entità dei mutamenti sociali e culturali avveratisi nel corso dell'Ottocento fu tale da condizionare l'intero «secolo breve» che gli avrebbe immediatamente fatto seguito. Anche per questo, la produzione letteraria italiana di una fase così cruciale della storia moderna merita di essere l'oggetto di una collana di studi specifica, aperta ad approcci metodologici diversi ma con un'attenzione particolare alle ricerche eseguite direttamente sui testi. Verranno accolti contributi in italiano e nelle principali lingue europee. Ogni volume della collana «Il secolo lungo» è stato sottoposto a una doppia revisione paritaria anonima. La collection, dirigée par Claudio Gigante et Dirk Vanden Berghe, rassemble textes et études consacrés à la littérature italienne du XIXe siècle, période considérée ici dans sa plus ample extension chronologique, de la première campagne napoléonienne en Italie à la fin de la Grande Guerre ; ce qui en réalité coïncide avec l’ère du Risorgimento. Les profonds changements sociaux et culturels qui se sont produits au cours du XIXe siècle ont fortement influencé le « court XXe siècle ».
