Mediated Youth publishes cutting-edge research on the cultures, media and artifacts of children, tweens, teens, and young adults. This series aims to understand the complex relationship between youth and mediated cultures, and, whenever possible, include the voices of youth themselves. The series welcomes works that study any forms of digital culture, media culture or popular culture, such as social media, gaming, film/TV, music, fashion, sports, toys, leisure, clubs, school cultures/activities, film, dance, language, licensing/merchandising, and subcultures. Books in this series endeavor to explore how young people critically engage with mediated culture. The series invites works that engage with transdisciplinary methods and embrace a variety of critical perspectives.

Critical Intercultural Communication Studies

Within Communication, culture is broadly understood as a meaning-making process that evidences itself within discourse, mediated forms, and interactional instances to constitute group autonomy. Within that meaning-making process, intercultural communication considers relationships between institutions and their societies, media and their audiences, and peoples and their communities. The formalized study of intercultural communication has always been problematic; like most disciplines and subdisciplines, its usefulness and limitations emerge from the historical context in which it is studied. Developed after World War II, intercultural communication initially served as an applied area of study to train U.S. governmental and business entities for relationships beyond U.S. borders. Then, out of the struggles of the U.S. Civil Rights era, intercultural communication expanded to concern itself with relationships between differing racial and ethnic groups. By the turn of the twentieth century, some intercultural communication scholars had fully embraced studying the differential power relations between nations, communities, and individuals thus catalyzing a body of research known as critical intercultural communication. Now, heading into the middle of the twenty-first century, critical intercultural communication has come into focus as an area of study that emphasizes, explains, and seeks to resolve power relations within specific contexts, applying theories and modes of inquiry suited to contemporary issues understood within their ongoing historical dynamics. As our institutions and their societies, mediated forms and their corresponding audiences, and communities and their members continue to alter and morph, critical intercultural communication adapts to interpret and envision progressive, socially just ways forward. This series, therefore, invites scholarship that challenges status quo cultural constitutions by recognizing and problematizing hegemonic modes of belonging and being. Spanning a range of contexts, critical intercultural communication considers symbolic and performative orders across local, national, hemispheric and transnational circuits. Moreover, this series fosters interdisciplinary conversations that innovate ontological and epistemological forms, advancing a range of systematic intellectual approaches to cultural transformation and validation. The series is particularly interested in works grounded in BIPOC, decolonial, feminist, queer, crip, and/or kink perspectives that construct claims, knowledges, and theories capable of guiding society toward new social justice knowings.

Das „Schweizer Jahrbuch für Musikwissenschaft" ist das jährliche Publikationsorgan der Schweizerischen Musikforschenden Gesellschaft (SMG). Die jetzt laufende Neue Folge wurde 1980 vom damaligen Präsidenten der SMG, Prof. Dr. Ernst Lichtenhahn, lanciert und knüpft an bei einer ersten Folge von sieben Jahrbuch-Bänden (zwischen 1924 bis 1938) aus der frühen Zeit der Gesellschaft (damals noch: Neue Schweizerische Musikgesellschaft). Programmatisch ist heute wie damals die breite thematische Ausrichtung der im Jahrbuch publizierten Aufsätze. Bände mit Themenschwerpunkten (u.a. Kongressberichte) wechseln mit freien Bänden. Beiträge in- und ausländischer Autorinnen und Autoren in französischer, deutscher, italienischer oder englischer Sprache bieten ein grosses Spektrum der wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung mit Phänomenen der Musik. Damit dient das Periodikum dem internationalen Austausch und ist zugleich eine Plattform für musikwissenschaftliche Forschung aus der Schweiz. Die thematische Palette reicht von der Musik des Mittelalters bis zu zeitgenössischen Kompositionen, kann historiographische, aufführungspraktische, ästhetische, aber auch ethnomusikologische und weitere systematische sowie fächerübergreifende Fragestellungen einschliessen, mit unterschiedlichen Gewichtungen in den einzelnen Bänden. Band 37 schliesst die Reihe ab. Das Schweizerische Jahrbuch für Musikwissenschaften erscheint ab Band 38 ausschliesslich online bei Bern Open Publishing, Universitätsverlag, Bern.

The CSF is a think tank that carries out activities of interdisciplinary research, documentation, information regarding domestic and supra-national federalism, developments in the area of regional and continental integration first and foremost the European Union and problems related to the world order and the process of democratisation of the international system. The Modernist Revolution in World Literature

In the stormy time period approximately between the Paris Commune in 1871 and the revolutionary events in May 1968, or between the conclusion of the American Civil War and the withdrawal of American troops from Vietnam, the rise and fall of international modernism was crucial to all historical, political, and intellectual de-velopments around the world. By the time the United States had emerged from its military involvement in Indo-China, the modernist movement had given way to postmodernism. This series investigates the development of international modern-ism in the half century leading up to World War I and its disintegration in the fol-lowing fifty years. High modernism claimed that it represented a break with corrupt values of previous cultural traditions, but we now think that this very drive to “make it new” is itself derivative. What are the roots and characteristics of modernism? How did the philosophical and pedagogical system supporting modernism develop? Is mod-ernism, perhaps, not a liberating movement but a device to shield high culture from rising democratic vulgarization? What is the role of modernism in postcolonial struggles? Where does feminism fall in the modernist agenda? How do changing systems of patronage and the economy of art influence modernism as an enor-mously expanded reading public becomes augmented by cinema, radio, and televi-sion? The Centre for Swiss Cultural Studies in the Department of Modem Languages at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow (GB) was set up in 1996, formalising a long tradition of publication, research and teaching irr Swiss studies there. As part of the expansion of activities in publishing and in creating outlets for scholarly work, it was decided to launch a series, Occasional Papers in Swiss Studies. lt is envisaged that each volume of the series, which will appear at intervals of about a year, will bring together approximately six essays relating to a single theme and written by scholars in the field of Swiss studies. lt is the aim of the editors to select themes which have a contemporary dimension and, whilst the majority of the essays will have a literary focus, each number will contain at least one essay by a scholar in a discipline such as history or cultural studies. lt is hoped that the series will both present aspects of Swiss culture and contribute to general debate on matters Swiss.

The Old Greek verb theaomai – looking both with the mind’s eye and the actual eye - since the very beginning of European theatre suggests a close relation between theatre and theory. Within the act of perception the spectators, theates, relate the things they hear and see to the site of their memory and psyche. Of all the arts those who reflect the process of perception in the aesthetic form itself are performative arts. This series publishes interdisciplinary studies between theatre- and media studies as well as studies on the visual arts that analyse the social and subjective potential of the aesthetic process of looking, hearing, and reading. Das altgriechische Verb theaomai –„mit dem geistigen wie konkreten Auge schauen“? legt seit den Anfängen des europäischen Theaters eine enge Beziehung von Theater und Theorie nahe. Diese wird vom Zuschauer theates über den Akt seiner Wahrnehmung geknüpft: er verbindet konkretes Hören und Sehen mit dem Schauplatz seines Gedächtnisses und seiner Psyche. Künste, die diesen Prozess des Wahrnehmens in der ästhetischen Form selbst reflektieren, somit Denken und sinnliche Teilnahme des Rezipienten fordern, um die Sinnpotentialitäten des ästhetischen Gegenstands zu realisieren, sind performative Künste. Part of the Peter Lang Diversity series, the Gender and Sexualities in Education series seeks to publish high quality manuscripts that address the complex interrelationship between gender and sexuality in shaping young people’s schooling experiences, their participation in popular youth cultures, and their sense of self in relation to others. Books published might include: a study of hip-hop youth culture, Latina/o students, white working class youth, or LGBTQQ community groups –– in each case asking how they explore, challenge, and perform gender and sexualities as part of learning and «“becoming somebody».” Other books might address issues of masculinities, gender and embodiment, trans and genderqueer youth, sexuality education, or the construction of heteronormativity in schools. We invite contributions from authors of ethnographic and other qualitative studies, theoretical texts, as well as critical analyses of popular culture “«texts”» targeted at or produced by youth – including an analysis of popular music and fan culture, video and film, and gaming culture. While the focus of the series is on original research or theoretical monographs, exceptionally well-crafted proposals for thematically coherent edited volumes and textbooks will also be considered. Founded in 1982 by the late Professor Horst W. Drescher, the series originally focused on literature and translation studies. Current editor, Professor Klaus Peter Müller, has since extended its scope into the fields of cultural and media studies, a widening of range and perspective that is also reflected in the faculty's bi-annual Scottish Studies Newsletter. The series aims to explore both Scotland's turbulent past and its intriguing present flux in its culture, society, politics, economy, media, art, and literature. In order to evaluate their suitability for publication, all texts submitted will be peer-reviewed by the general editor as well as by members of the editorial board.
