Language Testing and Evaluation

Aims and Scope The aim of this series is to provide a forum for publishing theoretical and empirical research of a high standard in all areas of language testing and evaluation. Our focus is on research into language tests and assessment tools as well as on programme evaluation in which emphasis is placed on the characteristics of the instruments themselves. It is our intention to enhance the possibilities for international scholarly debate among experts as well as to make research findings and new developments known to practitioners and the interested public worldwide. We welcome contributions in English, German or French. Zielsetzung Die Serie dient als Publikationsforum für anspruchsvolle theoretische und empirische Forschung zum Testen und Evaluieren im Bereich des Lehrens und Lernens von Sprachen. Dabei geht es sowohl um Sprachtests und Assessment-Instrumente als auch um Fragen der Sprachprogrammevaluation, bei denen die Messinstrumente selbst im Vordergrund stehen. Die Absicht ist, einerseits zur Verbesserung der internationalen wissenschaftlichen Diskussion beizutragen sowie andererseits Forschungsergebnisse und neue Entwicklungen sowohl den in der Praxis Tätigen als auch einem breiteren interessierten Publikum zugänglich zu machen. Die Publikationssprachen sind Englisch, Deutsch oder Französisch.

Die Qualität der in dieser Reihe erscheinenden Arbeiten wird vor der Publikation durch den Herausgeber der Reihe geprüft.

The series welcomes publications of scholars who specialize in social and political philosophy, ethics, religious studies, political theory and political science. Studien zur Text- und Diskursforschung

Das Ziel dieser Reihe ist es, theoretische Probleme und empirische Beobachtungen der Text- und Diskurslinguistik vorzustellen und zu diskutieren. Es handelt sich um die Entstehung und Entwicklung der beiden Forschungsgebiete, ihre wichtigsten Schwerpunkte, aber auch um terminologische Kontroversen und strittige Fragen. Im Mittelpunkt des Interesses stehen darüber hinaus die Relation Text vs. Diskurs sowie Überlegungen zur weiteren Entwicklung der Forschung in beiden Bereichen. Sowohl Probleme des Textes und Diskurses als linguistische Phänomene, der Textsorten und verschiedener Diskurstypen, als auch Einzelfragen wie die Stellung der Intertextualität oder des Textes in der multimedialen Wirklichkeit bilden die Gegenstände für eine potentielle Erörterung. Geplant sind Arbeiten, die einzelsprachlich ausgerichtet sind. Dabei liegt der Schwerpunkt auf kontrastiven Studien (in erster Linie Deutsch-Polnisch, aber auch andere Sprachen), weil letztere sowohl für Germanisten als auch Slawisten von Belang sind. Nicht zuletzt sollen interdisziplinäre Ansätze, die in der aktuellen Wissenschaftsdebatte nicht nur zum Postulat, sondern auch oft zur Forschungsrealität werden, in der geplanten Reihe gezeigt werden, sodass Arbeiten mit einer großen Schnittmenge von Themen aus mehreren Fachgebieten zu begrüßen sind. Die Reihe wird sowohl Monographien (vor allem Dissertationen und Habilitationen) als auch Sammelbände aufnehmen, die sich in das skizzierte Themenspektrum einpassen.

The series Language and Text Studies publishes works of a broad range of research on aspects of language and text, including English, French, German, Slavonic and Baltic studies. The editors Alexander Brock and Katrin Schlund are linguists at the English and Slavonic Departments of Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. Moving Texts/Testi mobili questions Italian memory and identity from the perspective of literary and media studies, providing a forum for discussions on major research topics, including migration and mobility studies, cultural studies, cultural memory studies, film studies, translation studies and studies on linguistic attitudes and sociolinguistic changes. Moving Texts/Testi mobili is open to research conducted within established and emerging fields of investigation. It specifically promotes multi-perspective, multi-disciplinary and inter-medial approaches. The series uses double-blind peer review and is supported by an international advisory board. Proposals in Italian, French or English are welcome both for the main series (monographs and edited volumes), and for Moving Texts/Testi Mobili – Tandem, the sub-series for conjoined essays by two different authors. Potential contributors are invited to submit a book proposal consisting of an outline, a sample chapter and a CV. Only complete manuscripts following the series guidelines are accepted for peer review. *** Moving Texts/Testi mobili　indaga la memoria e l’identità italiana offrendo uno spazio aperto a ricerche su migrazione e mobilità, a studi culturali e sulla memoria culturale, nonché a saggi nei seguenti ambiti: letteratura, media, traduzioni, attitudini linguistiche e cambiamenti sociolinguistici. Issues in healthcare ethics affect almost every person all over the world. The immense leaps in science and technology, changes in the general perception of national and global interests, possible limits in resources, mass communication, and other possible limits in resources, mass communication, and other factors have currently engendered a stronger interest and concern with health. This may range from the commonly discussed issues of euthanasia, abortion, macro- and microallocation of resources, and mandatory AIDS testing to the less frequently addressed but still vital issues in pharmacology, genetic testing, screening and therapy, nursing, mental health, and public health. Books, articles, and scholarly studies appear frequently in many countries. In each, the literature tends to consider the ethics of healthcare issues in depth but from a standpoint defined by culture and nationality, and by national government policies and perspectives. Such a standpoint necessarily limits and excludes many potentially useful and innovative approaches to issues. The International Healthcare Ethics series presents a broad perspective on a wide range of healthcare issues and the exchange of ideas between cultures and nations to stimulate thought. The series Wirtschaftspsychologie (Business Psychology) is characterized by the integration of economics and psychological issues. Both monographs and anthologies are published in German and English. The series focuses on organizational and management research as well as on aptitude testing, and it concentrates on the intersection of empirical and theoretical concepts. Theoretical approaches are reflected among others in issues of social psychology of the workplace. Empirical approaches are characterized by broad, methodological orientation. Among the broad structural transformation processes at the global level, the international legal recognition of human rights occupies an exceptionally prominent position. The dimensions of this process include standard setting, the functioning of sophisticated machineries for the promotion and protection of human rights, the development of a specific international case-law as well as new priorities of the political agenda. The human rights paradigm is at the heart of a new set of interrelated principles, which are equally valid at both the domestic and the international levels – such as the rule of law, democratic principles and the responsibility to protect – and of great strategic visions, as human development and human security. New functions, such as human rights monitoring, election observation, fact-finding and inquiry have already been admitted to international practice. This series intends to foster the publication of volumes that investigate the multiple facets of a strongly evolving reality, and stimulate the production of new and innovative ideas. It offers to highlight how the human rights paradigm is at times used and at times disregarded or exploited in cases and situations that regard among others those belonging to vulnerable groups (immigrants, asylum seekers, persons with disabilities), NGOs and human rights defenders’ advocacy, intercultural dialogue, governance of world economy, bio-technologies and peace operations. Those studies which adopt inter- and trans-disciplinary approaches, in accordance with the fundamental principle of interdependence and indivisibility of civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, will be favored. La collana avvia una riflessione sui rapporti tra letteratura e altri saperi, osservando il modo in cui il testo letterario si arricchisce di temi, lessico, stili, forme, retorica propri di altri ambiti scientifici. Obiettivo della collana è indagare la rete di relazioni che la ricerca letteraria intrattiene con i linguaggi artistici (dal cinema al teatro, alla musica, alle arti figurative, alla serialità televisiva), con le discipline scientifiche (dalla biologia all’ecologia, dalle neuroscienze alla matematica), con la medicina, (dalla medicina narrativa alle Medical Humanities), con le scienze sociali, con il diritto, con l’economia e con le tecnologie. L’originalità della ricerca che si propone consiste nell’ambizione di rispecchiare l’intreccio tra ambiti apparentemente diversi, indagando il modo in cui le conoscenze letterarie influiscono sulle altre e viceversa, nel tentativo di correggere ogni rigida chiusura in specialismi contrapposti e cogliere l’evoluzione storica ed epistemica attraverso forme di dialogo e/o di scontro. La collana ospiterà opere dedicate al tema delle intersezioni tra discipline, mantenendo la letteratura sempre al centro degli equilibri. La prospettiva dovrà essere preferibilmente letteraria, con un’attenzione privilegiata alla letteratura italiana.

Critical Intercultural Communication Studies

Within Communication, culture is broadly understood as a meaning-making process that evidences itself within discourse, mediated forms, and interactional instances to constitute group autonomy. Within that meaning-making process, intercultural communication considers relationships between institutions and their societies, media and their audiences, and peoples and their communities. The formalized study of intercultural communication has always been problematic; like most disciplines and subdisciplines, its usefulness and limitations emerge from the historical context in which it is studied. Developed after World War II, intercultural communication initially served as an applied area of study to train U.S. governmental and business entities for relationships beyond U.S. borders. Then, out of the struggles of the U.S. Civil Rights era, intercultural communication expanded to concern itself with relationships between differing racial and ethnic groups. By the turn of the twentieth century, some intercultural communication scholars had fully embraced studying the differential power relations between nations, communities, and individuals thus catalyzing a body of research known as critical intercultural communication. Now, heading into the middle of the twenty-first century, critical intercultural communication has come into focus as an area of study that emphasizes, explains, and seeks to resolve power relations within specific contexts, applying theories and modes of inquiry suited to contemporary issues understood within their ongoing historical dynamics. As our institutions and their societies, mediated forms and their corresponding audiences, and communities and their members continue to alter and morph, critical intercultural communication adapts to interpret and envision progressive, socially just ways forward. This series, therefore, invites scholarship that challenges status quo cultural constitutions by recognizing and problematizing hegemonic modes of belonging and being. Spanning a range of contexts, critical intercultural communication considers symbolic and performative orders across local, national, hemispheric and transnational circuits. Moreover, this series fosters interdisciplinary conversations that innovate ontological and epistemological forms, advancing a range of systematic intellectual approaches to cultural transformation and validation. The series is particularly interested in works grounded in BIPOC, decolonial, feminist, queer, crip, and/or kink perspectives that construct claims, knowledges, and theories capable of guiding society toward new social justice knowings.

Critical Praxis and Curriculum Guides

The Critical Praxis and Curriculum Guides is a curriculum-based series reflective of theory creating praxis. The series targets not only undergraduate and graduate audiences, but also tenured and “experienced” teachers of all disciplines. Research suggests that teachers need to have well-designed, thematic-centered curricula and lessons at their disposal. This is accomplished when the school works as a community to meet their own needs. Community in this sense includes working collaboratively with students, parents, and local community organizations to help build the curriculum. Practically, this means that time is devoted to professional development workshops, not exam reviews or test preparation pointers, but real learning. Together with administrators, teachers form professional learning communities (PLCs) to discuss, analyze, and revise curricula and share pedagogical strategies that meet the needs of their particular school demographics. This communal approach was found to be more successful than requiring each individual teacher to create lessons on her/his own. Ideally, we would love it if each teacher could create their own authentic lessons because only s/he truly knows her/his students – and we encourage it, because it is possible! However, as educators ourselves, we understand the realities our colleagues in public schools face, especially when teaching in high needs areas. The Critical Praxis and Curriculum Guides provides relief for educators needing assistance in preparing their lessons. When possible, and in the spirit of communal practices, the series welcomes co-authored books by theorists and practitioners or solo-authored books by an expert deeply informed by the field. Ultimately, the guides will serve as resources for teachers to use, expand upon, revise, and re-create.
