The Pedagogy of Violent Extremism is the first critical analysis of violent extremism via the lens of pedagogical development that considers the nation as an all-encompassing learning environment. Naval Shiphandling and Violent Extremism

In this last book, the discussion concentrates on how hegemonically provoked violent extremism is a realization of past warning through a concept used in naval shiphandling known as advance and transfer (Crenshaw, 1974). Advance and transfer is a term shiphandlers use to identify turning points when maneuvering at sea. Advance is the distance a ship continues on its original course from the time a shiphandler puts over the rudder until the ship comes to its new course. Complementing advance is transfer; the movement a ship travels perpendicular to the ship’s original course prior to putting the rudder over. Working with a ship’s inertia in the physics of advance and transfer are the characteristics of the wind and sea. The strength of the wind and sea against a ship are the properties of set and drift. In shiphandling, set and drift are natural features of the sea’s current and winds working against a ship’s motion. Set is the bearing of the sea’s current. Drift is the speed of the current and the force of the wind working on a ship’s sail area. ← 131 | 132 →
