Focusing on the wildly successful Twilight series, this collection of scholarly essays examines the phenomenon from diverse theoretical and methodological perspectives. Particular attention is paid to cultural, social, and economic aspects of the series and to the recurrent messages about youth, gender roles, romance, and sexuality. Essays discuss race and religion, and provide audience analyses of young adult, adult, anti-, and international fans. Other chapters are political-economic examinations into celebrity, tourism, and publishing. With new research by established and rising scholars, this volume is a significant contribution to the growing field of youth studies and complements existing feminist cultural analyses of media texts.

Contributors Melissa Ames is an assistant professor at Eastern Illinois University specializing in media studies, television scholarship, popular culture, and feminist theory. Her work has been published in a variety of an- thologies and journals, including her book, Feminism, Postmodernism, and Affect: An Unlikely Love Triangle in Women’s Media (2008), and chapters in Grace Under Pressure: Grey’s Anatomy Uncovered (2008), Writing the Digital Generation (2009), and American Literature After the American Century (2009). Jennifer Stevens Aubrey is an assistant professor of Communication at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Her broad research interest is youth culture, and in particular, she studies the ways in which media influence young people’s self-perceptions, including sexuality, body image, and gender roles. Her work has been published in a variety of journals, including Journal of Communication, Media Psychology, and Sex Roles. Elizabeth Behm-Morawitz is an assistant professor of Communication at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She studies media representations of gender and race/ethnicity and the effects of these portrayals on individuals and society. Her work has been published in peer-reviewed journals, such as Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Media Psychology, and Human Communication Research. Inger-Lise Kalviknes Bore is lecturer in Media and Cultural Theory at Birmingham City University. She has previously published work on TV comedy audiences, and her broader research interests include screen fiction and media audiences. Tricia Clasen is an associate professor of Communication at University of Wisconsin-Rock County.
