World literature, first intuited in Goethe’s foundational idea of weltliteratur as literature that seeks to transcend national boundaries, is viewed here in its essential mobility and migratory capacity, which relies on the centrality of the reading act. This volume focuses on foundational texts as they are read across cultures, languages and historical contexts. Its goal is to reflect on canonical texts – from Homer’s Odyssey to Murakami’s Genji, from Cervantes to Mayan hieroglyphs, from Dante to Coetzee, from Goethe to Lezama Lima, from the Thousand and One Nights to Jorge Luis Borges – in a global perspective: how they are translated, appropriated, transformed, how they travel across different cultures and languages, their foundational status evolving accordingly in a post-European world.

The Canonization of the Thousand and One Nights in World Literature: the Role of Literary Criticism Richard Van Leeuwen o achieve the status of a “canonical” text in world literature, a literary work has to possess several characteristics, connected both with its form and its contents. First, it should have the originality and potential which induce writers to take it as a literary paradigm, both in the aesthetical and in the ethical sense. That is, it should contain formal elements and thematic ideas which are, on the one hand, considered to be quintessential to the work, but on the other hand potentially of universal relevance. Second, the work should preferably be marked by a certain measure of generic instability, caused, for instance, by the anonymity of its author, its ambiguous meanings, or its formal or conceptual eccentricity. This instability will foster efforts to incorporate the work into the literary field, secure a continuous debate about its nature, and allow others to exploit its ambiguity in their own texts. When these conditions are met, a text will retain its vitality and continue to function as a point of reference for other texts. The characteristics mentioned above are all relevant for the history of the reception of the Thousand and One Nights in the West.
