Third World Countries Under Western Siege Noam Chomsky and Pierre Orelus in Dialogue s e v e n Context of the Dialogue the dialogue that follows took place on March 18, 2005, at Noam Chomsky’s office at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . While writing some essays on the impact of globalization, imperialism, and the legacy of colonization on Third World countries, including Haiti, I felt that, besides my lived experience with and information excerpted from books about these issues, it was imperative that I have insights from critical theorists who have a keen understanding of how colonization, globalization, and Western imperialism have negatively impacted these countries’ economic, political, and educational systems . To this end, I decid- ed that I would interview Professor Chomsky who, throughout his scholarly and human rights activist work, has brilliantly unmasked the imperial and neocolonial actions of Western power against formerly colonized countries such as Haiti and India . Thanks to his intellectual generosity, Professor Chomsky agreed to share with me his insights on the colonial, neocolonial, and Western imperialist actions on Haiti and other Third World countries such as India and Nicaragua . Professor Chomsky started by briefly talking about the history of colonialism and its negative impact on India and Haiti . He went on to talk about Western imperialist actions against these two countries . In the case of Haiti in particu- lar, Chomsky talked about how the United States, through its neoliberal foreign policy, has politically destabilized and economically exploited that country since Orelus.indd 97 11/12/13...
