Intersectionality is a term coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989. A scholar of law, critical race theory, and Black feminist thought, Crenshaw used intersectionality to explain the experiences of Black women who – because of the intersections of race, gender, and class – are exposed to exponential forms of marginalization and oppression. Intersectionality & Higher Education documents and expands upon Crenshaw’s ideas within the context of U.S. higher education. The text includes theoretical and conceptual chapters on intersectionality; empirical research using intersectionality frameworks; and chapters focusing on intersectional practices. The volume may prove beneficial for graduate programs in ethnic studies, higher education, sociology, student affairs, and women and gender studies alike.

e d i t o r Donald Mitchell, Jr., PhD Donald Mitchell Jr.’s scholarship theoretically and empirically explores the effects of race, gender, and underrepresented identity intersections in higher education contexts, with a particular interest in historically Black fraternities and sororities and historically Black colleges and universities as microsystems and macrosystems of analysis. He was awarded the Center for the Study of the College Fraternity’s 2012 Richard McKaig Outstand- ing Doctoral Research Award for his dissertation, “Are They Truly Divine? A Grounded Theory of the Influences of Black Greek-Lettered Organizations on the Persistence of African Americans at Predominantly White Institutions.” He also was awarded the Multicultural/ Multiethnic Education Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association’s 2014 Dr. Carlos J. Vallejo Memorial Award for Emerging Scholarship, the American College Person- nel Association’s Standing Committee for Men and Masculinities 2014 Outstanding Research Award (with Dr. Darris Means), and the Michigan College Personnel Association’s 2013 John Zaugra Outstanding Research/Publication Award. Mitchell is assistant professor of higher education at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In addition, he currently serves as managing editor and editorial board member of the Journal of African American Males in Education and editorial board member for the Journal of Ethnographic & Qualitative Research and Oracle: The Research Journal of the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors.
