This book is critical now and in the future for anyone working in or concerned about our American schools, as the number of students from other nations, speaking other languages, and living different cultures, has dramatically risen. Called “culturally and linguistically diverse,” or CLD, these children are our future, and schools must welcome, accommodate, teach, and promote these youngsters if we as a country are to prosper.

In fact, over the last 150 or more years, public schools, and many private ones, have absorbed and helped children from dozens of cultural and language groups. For example, my grandparents were from both Hungary on my dear mother’s side, and from a “schtetle” later destroyed by the Nazis in Poland on my father’s. One grandpa whom I spent precious time with had been a house painter, his son (my dad) was a shop owner, and I am a professor, showing how Yiddish-speaking people from Europe were accommodated, grew, and learned from American education—and progressed up the social-economic ladders of life.

Thus, this book on cultural-linguistic diversity—and how to work in classrooms with these kids—is essential for teachers, administrators, parents of CLD students, and policymakers, if we are to continue to see progress from our school graduates.
