13. “This isn’t what we normally do”: Test Preparation and the Teaching of Writing (Fourth Grade)
A classroom teacher and writing-resource teacher worked collaboratively to guide their fourth grade students’ writing development. The teachers’ instruction was constructed from various research-based practices. However, these teachers did not recognize the effectiveness of these practices as they continually stated, “This isn’t what we normally do.”
• Fourth grade classroom
• Public school: 85% minority students, 94% free or reduced lunch
• Class: 19 males, 11 females; 7 ELL, 15 black, 12 Latina/Latino, 3 white
• Teachers [Ms. Stevens and Mrs. Lea]: White females with 10–15 years’ experience
