Contemporary Greek Film Cultures from 1990 to the Present

This collection of new writing on contemporary Greek cinema builds and expands on existing work in the field, providing a coherent analysis of films which, despite their international importance, have so far received limited critical attention. The volume maps key trends in Greek cinema since the 1990s within the wider context of production and consumption at both national and international levels. It offers a wide range of critical analyses of documentary and avant-garde filmmaking, art house and popular cinema, and the work of established and new directors as well as deliberations on teaching methodologies and marketing strategies. The book seeks to highlight the continuities, mutual influences and common contexts that inform, shape and inspire filmmaking in Greece today.

Stavros Alifragkis holds a diploma in Architecture from the Department of Architecture, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2002), an MPhil from the University of Cambridge (2003) and from the National Technical University of Athens (2004), and a PhD from the University of Cambridge (2010). His doctoral thesis focuses on the cinematic recon- struction of the socialist city of the future in Dziga Vertov’s Man with the Movie Camera (1929). His postdoctoral research on moving image data- bases about the city was conducted at the Department of Architecture, University of Thessaly (2015). He has taught undergraduate courses on the filmic representation of architecture and the city, architectural drawing, architectural representations and history of architecture, and history of art and architecture at various universities in Greece. Antoinetta Angelidi is a film director and visual artist. She studied Film Directing and Editing at the Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinématographiques in Paris; and Film Theory with Christian Metz. She has directed four full- length fiction films – Idées Fixes/Dies Irae (1977), Topos (1985), The Hours (1995) and Thief or Reality (2001) – which were screened at international film festivals and contemporary art museums. She has also shot several short films and created visual installations. She is Associate Professor in Film Directing in the Film School at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She has also taught film theory at the Universities of Patras, Thessaly and the Aegean.
