As a result of numerous requests from music colleagues and friends for a book that would take the mystery and hardship out of learning harmony, we finally succumbed and endeavoured to fill the brief by writing ‘Harmony Notes'.
Our first priority was to make it easily understood using uncomplicated language; aiming to fill it with accessible and numerous music examples, encouraging an imaginative and always creative approach within the bounds of common practice vocal harmony. Drawing on the experience of our many years of teaching we saw the need to have the information carefully and incrementally graded, bolstered by numerous exercises to ensure a deep understanding and application of the points under discussion.
We have used tonic solfa as an essential tool encouraging a musical approach and providing a viable means of attaching the sound to the symbol. All the examples are recorded to enable the student to track the sound in parallel with the written score.
Once we progress beyond the initial chapters, we adopt a learning sequence which provides a consistent approach, offering a working method which secures the learning.
1. Where a bass line of progressions is given, the emphasis is placed on crafting a shapely soprano melody with real musical content.
2. Where a soprano line is given, suitable progressions are selected to harmonise the melody.
