As a director and actor, Omar Porras has guided the destinies of the Teatro Malandro from a squat in Geneva to the greatest international stages. He now takes charge of the Théâtre Kléber-Méleau in Renens, another institution that like the Malandro bears the name of a free spirit. The Swiss Society for the Dramatic Arts has documented his career in the hope of making his eclectic creativity known to a broader audience.

Photographie : © Marc Vanappelghem. 98 Omar Porras first talks about the listening and concentration that enable him to achieve the special precision characteristic of everything that appears in his productions, each layer of which — from the stage space and music to the acting, costumes and lighting — is worked out gradually in rehearsal on the basis of suggestions made on stage. He describes the way invention is the result of a fierce search for the unpredictable that emerges during this process, and gives a number of examples to illustrate the key importance of mu- sic, rhythm and sound in his work. Porras then outlines in broad strokes his journey from his native Colombia, where he trained as a dancer before leaving for Europe. He relates how his education in the theory and practice of theatre took him from Paris to Pontedera, before he eventually founded the Teatro Malandro in Geneva, and describes the way...
