A Journey in Search of Wholeness and Meaning

This book explores the concept that the reality which is created by the consciousness inherent in the Western worldview is exceptionally limiting and probably unsustainable. After describing the contexts within which the book was written the author documents his personal journey in search of wholeness and meaning. From his experience of this journey he suggests that the wisdom, insight, and praxis contained within – what he describes as the meta-narratives of – Holism, Indigenous cultures, and Eastern traditions are manifestations of a holistic consciousness. The author explores the concept that a shift to such a holistic consciousness is required in order to redress the imbalance that is evident in all humanity’s relationships, and he suggests that enabling such a shift in consciousness would have deep implications for the concepts and contexts of community, adult learning, meaningful work, and sustainability.

The previous section explored the meta-narratives and highlighted the common themes that emerged from my immersion in and reflection on texts and engagement in collaborative conversation with writers, think- ers, and practitioners associated with the meta-narratives. In this section, I explore my understanding of the concept of cos- mology as it relates to my inquiry and highlight the concept of Ubi- quitous Sapience. I then describe the archetypes and structures that may synthesise the roles and responsibilities that the meta-narratives explored appear to ascribe to humanity. I also explore the role that holistic, transformative ways of knowing could have in relation to those potential archetypes and structures. Finally, I describe how a Harmonious Ontology, such as has previously been identified, may have the potential to facilitate a sustainable future for all beings. CHAPTER SIX Cosmology Universal wisdom, insight, and praxis I have previously discussed worldviews as being human constructs and systems of beliefs or understandings that humanity uses to make sense of its existence. The evolution of the Western worldview has brought it to a point where it is distinguished by the inherent radical separation between the individual and the entity, relationship, expe- rience, or phenomenon being encountered. This tendency separates the individual, family, community, or society from the multiple and com- plex contexts they exist within. The nature of this book and the con- text within which it has been written demand an epistemological framework where this natural tendency does not exist. I describe this framework as Cosmology.
