Interpreting in a World of Change
Last year I spoke at this Forum about the challenges to our profession brought about by change, about growth on language translation and interpretation markets, the new virtual ways of holding meetings with interpretation and the gradual merging in some cases, but certainly the increased cooperation and exchange between different branches of interpretation. I also spoke about the need to teach very special and different skill sets for each area of work in courts, public service and conference interpreting. I mentioned the problem of lack of recognition of the profession and the mass of non-professionals beginning to flood markets. I touched on changing client needs – one stop shopping and the increasing number of intermediaries proposing interpreting services.
