The Populated Porch: Figures and Foliage in Spanish Sculpture before the Pórtico de la Gloria
Elizabeth Valdez del Álamo
The richly international, yet strongly national, character of the Pórtico de la Gloria has long been recognized as expressing the portal’s function to welcome visitors of equally varied origins.2 This essay reviews formal, stylistic, and theological concepts that contributed to the decoration of the glorious portico of Santiago.3 Special consideration is given to the precedents for the Pórtico’s high relief, floral ornament and figural columns: columns with figural decoration as well as statue columns, for they are perhaps the most impressive element of Mateo’s great portal.4
