An issue for assessment quality in higher education
Appendix G: All essay marks
Essay grades (from Fail to H1) and marks (out of 30#)
# Marks are reported to one decimal place – where assessors marked out of 30, there is no differentiation below the level of half a mark, or .5; where assessors gave a percentage mark, then converted to a mark out of 30 (as reported under ‘The marking sessions’ in section 3.4.3 of the Method chapter), distinctions of one tenth of a mark are observed.
* On giving zero out of 30 to Essay 14, Assessor 4 remarked in his concurrent verbal report that this was “because of plagiarism”. Although this was undoubtedly severe, marks of less than 15 (all with the same grading outcome – Fail) are not unusual in the data set, in which there are thirteen other instances of marks below 15, making fourteen Fail grades in all (four of which were given to Essay 14).
