Romania’s Schengen accession bid: a sinuous path
Nicolae PĂUN and Adrian-Gabriel CORPĂDEAN
Abstract: This research falls into the broad category of International Relations and European Studies and encompasses a multidisciplinary perspective on the chain of events that have shaped Romania’s still incomplete process of joining the Schengen Area, eight years after its integration into the European Union. From a socio-political point of view, we aim to emphasise the presence of this intricate topic at the level of the civil society and in discourse, by means of speech analyses conducted on prominent decision-makers and other stakeholders. Furthermore, at the institutional level, it is particularly important to attempt to draw a timeline of the events that have become landmarks in Romania’s lengthy negotiation process on Schengen membership, with the inevitable twists and turns that have marked relations with the supranational and intergovernmental Community levels in this regard.
