Mapping the Dubbing Scene

Audiovisual Translation in Basque Television

Josu Barambones Zubiria

This book addresses a gap in the study of audiovisual translation (AVT) carried out in minority languages by exploring the role played by translations appearing on the Basque Public Broadcasting Service in the promotion and development of the Basque language. Using the framework provided by descriptive translation studies, the author illustrates the socio-cultural context of AVT in the Basque Country, focusing on the dubbing from English to Basque of television animation for children.
The most innovative aspect of the book lies in its cultural and descriptive approach. Following a corpus-based descriptive methodology, the study establishes a set of criteria for a contextual and linguistic analysis that embraces both the cultural and linguistic dimensions of translation and allows source texts to be compared with their translated versions at the macro- and micro-structural levels. The book uniquely offers a broad overview of the cultural context as well as a detailed analysis of the linguistic properties of the dubbed texts.

Chapter 3 - Descriptive Methodology Applied to the Field of Audiovisual Translation 55

Chapter 3 Descriptive Methodology Applied to the Field of Audiovisual Translation The aim of this chapter is to show the dif ferent stages the research has gone through in order to make a selection of audiovisual texts for their subsequent analysis. I began by surveying the audiovisual products dubbed and broadcast by the first channel of the Basque Public Broadcasting Service to ascertain what was available. To do this, I drew up charts and compiled catalogues to gain as precise a view as possible of the object of this study. The catalogue was the key methodological instrument for the whole of this research, as it did not only provide textual and contextual data, but also information that would eventually ensure that the selection of texts was not due to chance or random choice, and that it was suf ficiently representative. The selection of the corpus for the subsequent descriptive–comparative analysis has, there- fore, been established in an empirical and justified manner. The work began with the compilation and storing of the empirical data obtained after examining the programme schedules of EBT1 for the time frame of the research, that is, 2006. On completion of this first stage, the data was then analysed. The statistical analysis carried out provided a global overview of the foreign programming broadcast by ETB1 for the period under study and was the basis for corpus 0. The examination of the dubbed programmes on of fer was of vital importance for the research, as it led...
