Although the book is written from a sociological perspective, the combination of theory and practical insights make it accessible to a wide variety of readers. It aims to generate discussion and deepen understanding of an area into which there has been minimal research in Ireland and which poses a range of important questions for future researchers, practitioners and policy-makers.

Experiences during Marriage: Practical Aspects
The volume of data on the women’s experiences during marriage was such that two chapters are devoted to this period of their lives. This chapter deals with the practical aspects and the following chapter deals with the more emotional and relational aspects. The second research question about the processes and events that led to the women’s separations is addressed. The concepts which underpin much of the discussion are the concepts of love and care. These concepts will be explained before presenting the data on the women’s experiences of raising children, their satisfaction with the division of household tasks and the impact of work and money difficulties on their relationships.
