Chapter 3: Method

This chapter contains a description of the qualitative exploratory case study method used to carry out the study. The literature review in Chapter 2 covered the base for the research question used to understand leadership skills, behaviors, and traits of project managers that affect the performance outcome of construction projects. This chapter includes a discussion on the research method and design appropriateness, population, sampling, informed consent, confidentiality, geographic location, data collection, data analysis, and trustworthiness.

The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study was to explore leadership skills, behaviors, and traits of project managers for successful completion of projects within UAE construction industry. The research involved both observations and interviews for data collection. The study also involved experiences of 20 project managers from the construction industry of the UAE.

Palmos (2010) identified delay as the most common and costly issue in the construction projects of the UAE and the reason identified for the delays was a lack of good project leaders. Depending on leaders’ characteristics and the demand of the situation, leadership takes different forms (Walker, 2007). The identified leadership skills, behaviors, and traits may enable leaders of the construction industry to enhance their capability as well as that of their subordinates for better performance.
