A Study on the History Texts in Social Sciences Textbooks (Fourth Grade) in Terms of Genre and Theme

1. Introduction

In the new curriculum, Social Sciences is defined as “a primary school curriculum organized based on the understanding of collective teaching, which reflects the subjects of citizenship and such social sciences as history, geography, economics, sociology, anthropology, psychology, philosophy, politics and law in order to help individuals actualize their social existence, includes the compilation of different learning fields under a unit or theme, and covers an assessment of the interaction of individuals with their social and physical environments within the contexts of past, present and future” (MEB, 2006). While teaching the subjects of history as a part of the Social Sciences curriculum, the aim is to develop the students’ skills of historical understanding and thinking rather than just transferring knowledge and ensuring it is memorised by them(Yılmaz and Şeker, 2011).

Textbooks are one of the easiest and the most affordable means used by teachers during classes. A well organised textbook can easily reflect all the elements of the curriculum to the teacher. Textbooks are generally written pursuant to the country’s teaching program, which are organised in a way to ensure that students can learn by themselves, and include course subjects correctly and in a certain order (Çakır, 1997). A highquality textbook should also include cultural factors and values related to the social structure (Gürkan and Gökçe, 2000).

The development of the information covered by the term culture is delivered by history. Culture exists thanks to the fact that it is passed to the next generations. Continuity and survival of culture are only possible with works, education and teaching that cover culture. Therefore, cultural works are an absolute must for educational culture (Özbay, 2002). In this respect, another important role of a textbook within education is to have a context that holidays, local liberation and celebration days, important events as well as certain days and weeks should be taken advantage of in order to develop students’ sensitivity to history (Social Sciences Curriculum for 4th Grade, 2009).

Types of literary works categorised according to their form, technical features, and subjects are called genre. Literary genres are not text forms that never change. ← 13 | 14 → Persuasion, understanding, literary stories and narrations can be researched tangibly as readers’ understanding, interest and learning characteristics related to text genres (Sadoski et al., 2000).

Genres can be classified as fictional and informative literary genres. Fictional literary genres are various types of stories, fairy tales, autobiographies, biographies, legends, epics, mythologies, fables, novels, poems, songs, anecdotes, memoirs, travel writings, diaries, various types of plays (drama, comedy, Turkish folk plays like Karagöz shadow plays, etc.), and essays. Informative literary genres, on the other hand, are texts included in the textbooks of such courses as Life Sciences, Social Sciences and Science. As well as articles, critical reviews, news, letters, columns, and interviews included in newspapers and journals.

There is a big difference between history texts and literary texts based on history. In history texts, true stories are narrated within an objective frame. A text with an historical subject, on the other hand, does not aim to tell a truth to readers; rather, it aims to provide readers with literary pleasure, and give them an aesthetic feeling. For example such genres as novels, stories or plays are art pieces rather than history. History texts have formed such various genres as political history, history of civilization, and cultural history.

2. Objective of the Study

This study aims to detect to what extent, in terms of genre and theme, history texts are included within the Social Sciences textbook for fourth graders that is published by Başak Yayınevi, prepared by the General Directorate of Primary Education, Ministry of National Education, accepted as a textbook with the decision number 292 of the Education Board dated on December. 2009, and printed for the third upon the letter numbered 3398 of General Directorate of Support Services dated March 19, 2012. As well as the Social Sciences Textbook for fourth graders published by Evrensel İletişim Yayınları and accepted as a textbook with the decision number 1969367 of the Education Board dated on January 8, 2013. Answers to the following questions will be sought in order to realise this objective.

3. Method of Study

The study uses a descriptive research approach which uses screening model. “Screening model is a research approach aiming to describe a past or present situation as it is” (Karasar, 2009). The fourth grade Social Sciences textbooks published by Başak Yayınevi and Evrensel Yayınevi were analysed using with the method of content analysis based on the texts they include related to history, as well as the genres and themes of such texts. The main purpose of the content analysis is to reach the concepts and relations that can explain the collected data. Content analysis is a scientific approach which enables objective and systematic examination of materials in verbal form, written form and various other forms (Sert, Kurtoğlu, Akıncı and Seferoğlu, 2012).

The material of the study consists of the Social Sciences textbooks published by Başak Yayınevi and Evrensel Yayınevi, which have been accepted as fourth grade course books for five years starding in 2009 by the Education Board of the MEB. Since the books of the mentioned publishers are among the available ones, they have been analszed. A total of 80 history texts included in the books have been studied.

Genres and themes of the texts have been determined in line with the information included in the teacher’s books prepared for the same books. The data collected through the study have been put in order using frequency calculations.
