Daniela Pietrini and Kathrin Wenz

Abstract: The subject of the “crisis” is omnipresent and dominates much of the political and economic landscape. Especially in the presidential campaigns of 2007 and – even more – in 2012, the best ways to “respond to the crisis”, or “to get France out of the crisis” are the presidential debates. In political communication, narrative construction is often used to frame the different perspectives according to political guidelines. These narratives – popularized in France by Christian Salmon through the term of “storytelling” – often rely on conceptual metaphors.

For the analysis of political discourse, this has many methodical consequences because the metaphoricity of discourses often requires the integration of textual and cognitive approaches. In our contribution, we will use a corpus composed of election speeches made by the leading presidential candidates between 2007 and 2012. We will try to show the narrative structures which dominate in these speeches. What is the role attributed to the crisis in these narratives? What are the underlying concepts? Is the crisis perceived as a natural disaster which needs to be “contained” or rather as the logical consequence of bad political and economic choices?
