Edited By Daniela Pietrini and Kathrin Wenz

Abstract: This contribution compares different narratives evident in the German and the Italian press surrounding the ongoing European debt crisis, based on three interconnected levels of analysis: first, the topoi of the crisis; second, its figurative descriptions and their functions in the discourse; and lastly, the vocabulary used in the narrative of the crisis (semantic values, contextual uses, and discursive implications). The underlying methodological question concerns the possibility of conceiving a general framework of reference as a basis to compare texts which are dealing with the same subject but are the expression of different discourses, points of view and interpretations according to the linguistic and cultural community that produced them. This framework also aims at guiding translators toward a more profound understanding of the source text and should help them to make critical and informed linguistic choices during the translation of such sensitive texts.
