Approches linguistiques à la notion de crise / Approcci linguistici al concetto di crisi / Enfoques lingüísticos sobre el concepto de crisis

Edited By Daniela Pietrini and Kathrin Wenz

Inflazione negativa, disinflazione ovvero prezzi diversamente alti. Perché viene evitato il termine “deflazione”? Eufemismi e disfemismi in tempi di crisi dell’euro

Abstract: This paper starts from the observation that in 2014 the pertinent word “deflation” seems rarely to be used in economic press articles dealing with strong falling prices. The analysis of 220 published articles from Italian and German specialized press shows the phenomena of interdiction and avoidance of the pertinent word and allows finding out which substitution modules are used instead. Examples of this avoiding strategy are terms like the oxymoron “negative inflation” (similar to “negative growth”) or word formation techniques like abbreviation, calling deflation “D-word”, reducing words which one wants to avoid to their initial letter. In the language of economic information, the euphemistic strategy can serve two different functions: to “veil” or to “conceal”. The first one allows avoiding expressions which are offensive or have a negative meaning in the speech community. The concealing function occurs when euphemisms are used intentionally by a speaker in order to influence the behavior of the hearer. In 2014, in the time of economic crisis, speaking out too frankly would have caused damage to the economy by provoking undesirable reactions. If the governor of the central bank avoids pronouncing the word deflation, it is because he might provoke or strengthen expectations in this sense and thereby really contribute to its coming about, in the form of a self-fulfilling prophecy.
