The Impact of Using Internet Resources and Browser-based Virtual Worlds on the Level of Foreign Language Anxiety

Abstract

This chapter reports the findings of a classroom-based study whose main purpose was to investigate the impact of using Internet resources and a browser-based virtual world on foreign language anxiety levels among Polish senior high school students. Two groups, one treatment (n=13) and one control (n=14), participated in the research project. The intervention spanned the period of one week. The instruction in the treatment group was based on Internet resources and the browser-based virtual world Yoowalk, while the students in the control group followed their regular coursebook activities. The data were collected by means of the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (Horwitz et al. 1986), administered before and after the treatment, and subjected to quantitative analysis. The results show that although the intervention had a limited impact on lowering foreign language anxiety among the treatment subjects, it made them less anxious with regard to communication apprehension.
