The Tram, a Viable Alternative for Car Transport in the Suburban Area of Bucharest

Abstract: The tram is a transport system used for more than 100 years in Europe, which in the beginning of the XXI century has had a spectacular comeback. The tram system is well-established in Europe and is undergoing a global resurgence. After a period of decline, the tram has become an urban transportation mode of high perspective. In the last 20 years, at the European level, the trend of expanding and introducing the tram system widened from the urban to peri-urban area. The main reasons that led to the return of the tram are low power consumption, low-polluting and the high transport capacity. Technically speaking, the tram has seen major improvements becoming a fast and energy efficient mean of transportation, presenting a low degree of environmental pollution and transport conditions at its present requirements. The tram can lead to a significant increase in the mobility of the link between the city center and suburban areas, resulting in reducing road congestion, revitalising neighbourhoods and reducing carbon emissions. Having deep roots in the Bucharest public transport, this transport system, well planned and implemented, may be a solid foundation for the development of sustainable transport in the peri-urban area. Our study goal is to demonstrate the utility and the viability of this transport system development in the Bucharest Metropolitan Area.
